Basically, when the Soviet Union collapsed, they gave back countries' independence based on pre-Soviet borders. This caused a lot of fuckery, because places like Turkmenistan just elected eccentric communist party members who blew the entire countries' wealth on gold statues and marble that rotates to face the sun, or launching books into space, and countries like Moldova went straight into conflict with pro- and anti-Russian interests. The most analogous conflict in the region is Nagorno-Karabakh.
Essentially, the Russians gave Armenia and Azerbaijan their old borders back, but at the time the Soviet Union annexed them, the Armenians had land stolen from them by Azeris, in a region called Karabakh. Of course, as soon as they gained independence, rebel Armenians inside Azerbaijan carved their own territory, which still exists and is de-facto independent (fightin' Christians.)
This is similar in Chechnya. When the Russians made steps to give them their old land back, the Chechens invaded Dagestan with mercs, claiming they were returning to their true borders. Russia proceeded to absolutely annihilate their capital to the point where it was basically uninhabitable.
Interesting though, that Kadyrov's father was the leader of the rebels who wanted independence. Putin made a deal with his son that gave Chechny autonomy, but keep their warriors as Russian special forces and mercenaries, because Chechens have always been brutal fighters.
