No sallie mae is bullshit but it only happened because banks were retarded enough to offèr mortgages to people (aka nogs and poorfags) without checking credit or income, then sally mae was smart enough to buy then and have mortgage insurance companies (forget what they're called) back them if they defaulted which of course happened. Not sally maes fault that those insurers and people who got the mortgages they couldn't pay were retarded.
Also not the banks faults for it, although it was shitty it was not illegal. But letting the economy collapse worse because of that shit would have really sucked.

That's not my point. People are harping on bernie commenting on the difference between mortgage interest and student loan interest. I get why mort gage interest is lower, but I don't get why it doesn't make sense for the government to make a conscious effort to hand out lower interest rates on student loans so I can actually participate in the US economy after college instead of just feeding my money to sallie mae for 20 years

If I don't pay off the interest on my sallie Mae loan for even two months I'm barred from taking out loans via sallie mae for the rest of my life and still required to pay off the balance. Not only that, but sallie mae only disburses the amount I need to cover my bill on a semester basis. I understand what theoretically it's " riskier" but I don't understand how the risk of investing in things like low interest loans for stem carreers doesn't yield a significant reward that outweighs me and everyone else shoveling tens of thousands of dollars into a private company for decades
