Problem was that the part of the Reich east of Danzig was supplied through Poland. Germany had to pay in Zloty for the Transit rights through Poland... as Germany didnt get enough Zloty out of their Trades they transferred the missing sum in Reichsmark (the German currency).
This was taken as a brake of the treaty (which strictly speaking it was).
So Poland cut of one Transitroute after another and the People were cut off from supplies, esp. coal for heating/furnaces etc.
Hitler actually ordered the Wehrmacht to stay down a few more days for negotiations while they were already ready for an invasion.
UK had a similar pact in the working with the Soviets, akin to the Rippontrop pact. They too wanted to give a portion of Poland to Russia.
Also before declaring war on the soviets he gained intel that Stalin will break the treaty soon, so he attacked first to gain an advantage.
AFAIK it was 3 days before the Soviets would have attacked.
As a sidenote Hitler did try several times to negotiate for peace with the Allies, before WW2 as well as during WW2 while Germany was thought to win.
