Every state has a number of votes equal to their senators (they always get at least two) and congressmen. Meaning the least popular states get 3, and the big ones get like 30 or 40 (california, texas and new york).
To win all of the electors you need 50%+1 of the vote of the state. I believe New Hampshire and Nevada are exceptions for that. In order to win the presidency you need to win a plurality (270) total electoral votes among all the states.
This system ensures that a candidate popular in just one region can't dominate despite being hated by all the others. Imagine a candidate that represented California and the west coast, promising to ass fuck everyone else. He gets 100% of the votes from California and just 30% everywhere else, he would be president in a popular vote system. Whether you win 51% or 99% you get the same electoral votes from each state. This forces candidates to appeal to as broad a region as possible to ensure the country is being adequately represented.

also you overestimate how much the city controls the rest of NY. the upstate is ~10 mil that is overwhelmingly conservative except for Albany and Buffalo which have low populations. Trump doesn't have to close that big of a gap in order to win, and his prestige around NYC is pretty big.
