Trump knew Cruz would be his big rival, that's why he played the friendship side so hard early on.
Eventually Cruz had to go on the offensive, and Trump set himself up perfectly to play for sympathy. "I'm so concerned for Cruz's problems, I'm so disappointed by what Cruz said."
Trump doesn't even have to be correct about what he says. Even if the strategy is transparent, people still see mean old Cruz turning on a friend.

Go watch that interview of him just after 9/11, he was pretty shook up, he's one of the few people who can talk about 9/11 without it being meaningless pandering. If Cruz didn't want to hear about it he shouldn't have started talking about how much he hated New York.
