In Canada, we don't need to assimilate because we know our culture is strong. The immigrants and their children will naturally gravitate towards it. Rather than force it down their throats, we let them practice aspects of their culture (of course laws in Canada are still the law of the land) and they are eventually drawn to Canadian culture since we don't demonize them.
When you force something to someone, you're essentially telling that person "You're inferior, you must accept this and that". This is not practical.

These are all aspects of Canadian cultures. The difference with American culture is that Canada didn't really have big movement of cultures because we're just not as reactionary and rebellious. The hippy culture for example was very reactionary and as such became much more prominent because of the clashes it faces.
When there's clashes, there is more contrast and the culture (or sub culture) in question becomes more obvious.
