If you skill 4 year college, at least go to vocational school or technical school.

Just because low-level white collar work is a scam doesn't mean unskilled blue collar work is a viable career.

Get some proper training and weasel your way into a union.

>>
>>61011038
Depends. If you want to be an architect, medical doctor, engineer etc then go for it.

Lots of other stuff you can just do in community college for less money.

Or you can decide at 18 to just go work somewhere be making ~$50k by the time you turn 24 and have no debt.
>>
Protip

When people who don't go to college say it's for suckers

When people who don't own their own business tell you your idea is too risky

When people without a good job tell you jobs are for suckers

When people who are broke tell you money isn't everything

They are just trying to hold you down for their own comfort

Look up the degree/profession you want, consider the average salary, top 10% salary, and mid career salary

That should tell you how much you should spend on school

My pro tip to anyone who isn't academically inclined and is still young...get a job in Costco.

Pic related. That doesn't even show the excellent pension they still have (you can contribute 4% and Costco kicks in another 5%)

You also get paid extra on a Sunday. And once you get to the top rate you also get two bonuses a year usually worth a few grand each time.

Basically if you're 18 or 19 now you'll be earning about $50k plus a nice pension by the time you're 25 to basically work in a store doing easy work all day.

You don't need school if you're in "IT" at least, just need certs, and most of the bigger "well known" certs have so much free training online that you really don't have to pay for anything beside the exam. (Microsoft/RHEL/Cisco/Juniper/etc.) Don't bother with the CompTIA unless you want to do Govt. work, for some reason they want the useless Security+

Making ~80K simply because I can study on my own, pass an exam, and can think through a problem. Not above average intelligence, and didn't have any real advantage above anyone else. No school besides High School Diploma.
>>
>>61015310
what trade bro?
>>
I am pretty happy in my job. I shall of course move on and make some kind of progression. I might even go to uni if my plans require it.

Good thing I grew out of the idea of being an actor/director etc. The thing is that people doing apprenticeships are earning more than those with degrees, and they are more certain of following the same career as their course.

>Look up the degree/profession you want, consider the average salary, top 10% salary, and mid career salary

This is excellent advice. I paid a lot for school but it's paying off now that I'm making a six figure salary right out of grad as an engineer. Then I have friends who did completely useless majors and are now swarmed with debt; they would have been much better off going to trade school or a community college.

University IS a waste of time and money.

What do you want to be? Marine biologist? Look it up online, study the fuck out of it, go to an interview, wow them with your abilities.

No employer cares about your degree unless it's all you have to prove you're not a worthless shit.

This is why programmers who never spent a minute in college get the same jobs that kids who took 5 years of basketweaving with one c++ course get.

tl;dr if you're not a worthless faggot you can learn shit on your own, if you're a beta cuck who needs more shit on your stupid resume go to college you dirty chad

Get an A+ cert and that's it your in IT
>>

You need to figure out what you like, programming, networking, servers, etc. Then just youtube up, hit the exam, and drop the resumes.

First 6mo-year will be entry position obviously. Learn everything that you can and take all of the different kinds of work that you can get your hands on to show that what you lack in XP you have in potential; it's really worth more to have potential sometimes since IT is constantly changing.

No school or college. You'll want to check here for your testing center - http://home.pearsonvue.com/test-taker.aspx . That's not just Cisco, tons of cert programs use PearsonVue.

I think it's about 150$ now? Someone that may have taken it more recently could confirm, or just run through the site and it will tell you before checkout.

If you can get a CBT nuggets or INE subscription it would be the easiest. Definitely doable without though.
-search youtube for free training
-search the Cisco site for the exam blueprint (list of topics)
-know subnetting by the back of your hand
-acquire PacketTracer for labs
-OR PREFERABLY
-Install GNS3 and acquire an IOS image to setup labs
(Packet Tracer is not technically free but you can find it. It's a SIMULATOR, so it doesn't exactly work like real equipment. GNS3 is an EMULATOR, it runs real router code, and aside from any software bugs, it's the real deal. It's pretty easy to setup now, was a bit more complicated a few years back)

Start exercising. Gives you free dopamine. Won't guarantee you get out of the rut, but helps.

Alternatively, disappear for a month and catch a bus to nowhere. Possibly stress of being an artist (been there done that, was a musician now a programmer) is killing you and you can't fix it by staying in that mindset. Dissapearing would change your mind set.

If your funds and GPA are high enough to consider an post-grad study on the Middle East; It's a humongous field that probably would appreciate more researchers.

HOWEVER, it was risky AND VERY HARD (cried a lot).

But the thing that nobody sees is that going to school is actually the EASY WAY.

Having a business is very hard, but VERY VERY REWARDING. It teaches you A LOT about yourself ( I didnt know I was a crybaby).

YOU HAVE TO GO ALL IN ANON, DONT START A BUSINESS AND GIVE IT A WEAK SHOT!! POUR YOUR FUCKING SOUL ANON. Y O U R S O U L.

Seriously, I think everybody should give it a try :)

Of course social retards on 4chan will tell you that. You're not going to get a job solely with a degree, you also need to network.
You can network without a degree and get a decent job, but networking with a degree is more likely to get you a much better job, sooner.

Even arts degrees can be pretty useful if you're not socially awkward and have a network of people who can help you.

This meme has always been a projection.

EVERYTHING. The only thing that contributed to my business that I didnt learnn on the internet was accounting. I took a single accounting class at college at it was more than enough. But obviously you can learn accouting on the internet.

when I started I didnt even know how to use a saw to cut the wood. Now I am basically an expert. My competitors buy overpriced shit from the US and hire overpriced US people to make the machines work. I dont do that, I research and do it all by myself, and get better results.

If you know how to research the world is yours

I am a manufacturer. My uncle gave my dad and I 20,000 pesos (1100 dollars) to start the business. Basically nothing.

We bought old, underpowered saws, drills, etc. You could literally find better machines in the garage of the average american.

Of course, we started selling one project at a time.

The secret of my success is 'Lean Manufacturing'. We became very good at production, and reinvested everything we could.

If you are interested in manufacturing I can recommend some books

It's a counter reaction to the student debt crisis, which seems like a ploy to create educated slaves (because marijuana convicts generally can't be used to make your websites or balance your books).

In the recent state of the union address, Obama said that education should become affordable for everyone. This has a perfect parallel to when Bush said the same thing about property, in either case these political parties have identified something they feel all Americans should have and have attempted to create systems that benefit investors whilst still providing for consumers.

Unfortunately, this still has all the trademarks of any debt crisis and this is especially evident with rising youth unemployment, just as failing house prices caused the 08 recession. The interesting is that when everything defaults, how do you take someone's education away in any way similar to taking their property? You can't, so I only assume the end result would be debt slavery and forcing graduates to not declare bankruptcy.

Not saying it's not a good idea to get an education, just be careful about what career it's preparing you for. If it's not something that can feasibly pay back the loan...

Step 1: Be social and enthusiastic
Step 2: Be good at what you do (optional depending on how good you are at step 1)
Step 3: Do things which constantly remind those around you how much value you have in your field, or just constantly remind people that you exist through various means (social media, college/uni programs)
Step 4: Inquire among your contacts for job openings, or offer your contacts your talents for their projects
Step 5: Don't be a socially awkward, bitter and unlikable person

Congratulations, you now have a job, friends and possibly a girlfriend.

I manage an electrical contracting company. Basically you just work through tradeschool and get your journeyman's/master's electrician license. If you choose to work for some company, you can make ~80k a year as a foreman. Or you can start your own contracting company and make well over that working for yourself with more personal freedom.

Depending on the area you can make 6 figures easily.

Pro-tip: GET INTO SELLING/INSTALLING SOLAR PANEL SYSTEMS AS SOON AS YOU CAN. People pay ridiculous amounts of money for it.

See if you can get into the engineering or computer science programs at your current university. It's never too late to switch. I switched to electrical engineering after my junior year of college, finishing EE and Math in 6 years. Now I have a pretty easy "consulting analyst" job where I just sit on my computer doing nothing half of the time, so I started managing a local electrical company while I'm at it.

I have tons of family members that didn't go to college, but went to trade school for plumbing/electrical work/HVAC instead. They all make well over $50k minimum, some make over $100k a year. There are occasional overtimes where they work saturday or sunday and get paid double their hourly wage so there's a lot of room for money if you're willing to work for it.

For university?

no, you go as a mature student (over the age of 21 usually) - you'll discover some universities have almost 50% mature students on their courses because mature students are less likely to dick around like entitled school leavers. I did computer engineering and we had a bunch of people in their 40s and 50s from Pfizer, Microsoft and a bunch of other places.

For college (i.e. A-level, BTEC level 3 (never do less than lvl 3 if you want to get to uni after)?

no, there are many colleges where you'll get people of any age just like at university attending. When I was 17, I had 25 year olds on my college course (a BTEC).

Colleges also offer GCSEs if you need these to do A-levels, though that will put you another year back if you do a quick course or two if you do the normal time.

Honestly I dont think I'll have any way of getting into engineering or comp sci here. I'm retaking basic shit at the community college I mentioned over the summer because I took 2 years off and now have a lot of holes. Even at my best though, I dont think I can get into those

I've given serious thought to the Navy or just doing some shitty job like any kind of sailor just so i can travel

Don't do navy unless you know you want to get paid for college when your service ends.

Just go to trade school, try a couple of apprenticeships to get paid, and then decide if you're ok with doing exactly that(but getting increasingly higher wages) for the rest of your life.

Man, I'm 25 and I come from a family which has (on mother's side) doctors, bishops, engineers, uni teachers, artists...I studied to be a screenplay writer and I ended up working in an hotel. You are 20, you are still in time to go back to school; the question is: do you want it? And I don't mean it like "would you like it?"; no: do you really plan on putting all your energies, all your effort, all your mind and body in a topic, studying it, gutting and ripping it to its core to understand and discern what makes it so unique and valuable for you, your career, tour future? Now, answer me, with an honest and open heart.

Nope. That's why I'm not there. Several times I was told by my mother "you get out what you put in." I thought it over and realized, despite having a wide array of interests, I didn't care about school enough to make it worthwhile. I might like welding though and the course is only 5 weeks. Plus, I'm in the same place as the most important shipyard in North America and one of my neighbors hires welders, so it seems like the right way to go at the moment

Aren't Scots eligible for student loans with the SLC or do you have a different system to us English? Have you already been to university and dropped out?

Just a heads up about student loans with SLC - if you were to go on a typical 3 year course, you get 4 years of student loans available.

If you drop out during, say, year 2, that means you have used two years of student loans available to you (even if you left after just one week of attending the course, though I'm sure there is an appeals process for this or something).

So you've used two years, out of a total of four years worth, while you were on a three year course, effectively giving you two years left of remaining loans.

That means if you apply to do another three year course, two of those three years will be covered still by student loans, but you'll have to fund the first year yourself.

It's kind of a second chance system, so long as you don't fuck up your first university opportunity too hard (i.e. grin and bear it but drop out at the very last moment).

Any Canada bros here wanna tell me how hard it is to get in as a citizen from America?

>Tfw all my friends are doing masters/phD or honours at the very least

My grade average is 50%, and I need minimum 70% to get into honours
This is my third year :/

The apprenticeship program my local union offers takes 5 fuckin years where i'll be making 12 dollars an hour. Is this normal?
>>
>>61011178
Uni is best once you have some life experience. Get a trade or do something for 5 years or so, then go to uni. You'll actually have some perspective and enjoy the experience much more.
>>
>>61052381
Forgot to add, because after 5 - 10 years or so you can go back to uni and do what you really want to do and have an interest in.

Instead of meme degress like law and "arts"

>Or you can decide at 18 to just go work somewhere be making ~$50k by the time you turn 24 and have no debt.
spotted the boomer
>>
>>61052288
yes if you only make that for the first year, if that's all you make all 5 years then no it's not you should get a $2-3 raise each year to 6 months as time goes by and you advance in the apprenticeship.

I'm 24 and will have around 60k saved up, should have gone back to college or learned a trade years ago. No idea what the fuck to do now.
>>
>>61052381
>>61052453
Truth, it should also be a decision you alone make - parents are often a terrible influence on their children as can be tutors.

>>61051932
Well, you should get that degree regardless of honours or not. I don't want to be a downer, but if a nuclear engineer/physicist leaves without honours, chances are they aren't ever going to be working on a reactor.

But, having a basic degree will show you had some discipline and motivation to see it through to the end, knowing the odds were shitty and that may help in various job applications.

It will also be a great learning experience for you to look back on in the future ;)
>>
>I don't feel ready for college
>I'll take a couple years off

And just about the time I was ready to go back both of my parents were forced into early retirement due to serious medical issues and I had to remain employed full time just as a matter of survival.

Now in 2016 it's 10 years later and I know I'm never going back to school. So this is my life now I guess. It's not terrible but I will always wonder what my life would be like if I would have gotten a degree.

University is a waste if you arent going for something good that you want to do. Otherwise get a trade/learn a skill.
>>
>>61053350
Yes, well said about the parents, My Colonizer Friend.

Shitty parents who have no motivation in life think muh university is the answer. But actually the answer is just fucking work ethic. Pick something you like/can tolerate, do it well and you will be set
