The purpose of common core math is to increase fluency with numbers and to attempt to drive home an actual intuitive understanding of numbers, as opposed to the rote memorization of operations. The multistep drawn out addition process taught by common core is meant to increase MENTAL calculation abilities. It is a way of performing operations mentally instead of needing paper or calculator. I was a strong math student in school, and I did it this way naturally, because it's efficient and accurate. These bad examples have been cherry picked and are just examples of poor implementation of a strong method.
The column methods of addition and subtraction are still taught, just after some basic familiarity and intuition can be built up around the operations.
People who resist this method are generally intimidated by math and had trouble with it in high school. Closed minded ignorance is what it boils down to.
