Used to live there. Can confirm it is nice as long as you stay on the north side. Pikes Peak/Garden of the Gods is literally a 30min drive, there are several national forests that you can shoot, Hike, and camp in for free within say 3-4 hrs drive. Also there is a huge gun range in New Mexico that the NRA runs, about a 3 hour drive away so you can easily make a weekend trip there if you want.
The only downsides to the Springs are
1.) It's desert so lawns come in two varieties: expensive or dead
