You guys don't get category five tornadoes in Europe. You'd be singing a different tune if you did. What do you think an F5 tornado would do to Paris? Your buildings aren't magical. The tornado would ruin everything in its path. These things pick up trucks and throw them through buildings.

Imagine a weather phenomenon that is akin to how muslims have taken over your country and destroyed it. That's a tornado, basically.

Australia know what I'm talkin' about. Theirs are made of fire down there though, so a bit different.
>>
>>59465105
Yeah I asked a guy about build quality and tornadoes the other day.

Pretty much what you said. Apparently Euro quality housing would weather very low level storms, but anything getting to around T3 would be just as devastating and possibly even more dangerous, because it would be throwing even heavier shit about.

Makes sense to build houses out of cheap materials if they may need to be rebuilt often.

But we did have 1 massive cyclone in the 1970's and now all of the buildings within 100km of the coast are built to the same standards as a nuclear bunker. The place i lived in in Darwin had concrete backfilled and reinforced cinder block walls, the roof frames were anchored to the walls and the roofing iron had about 100,000 screws holding it to the battens. That's the kind of building codes that were introduced after only one event. And in america where they have tornado every year they keep building their houses out of match sticks and bible pages then complain when they blow away.

Unique weather conditions created by the way the rocky mountains and the vast expansion of plains beyond them cause air and pressure to flow across the united states. The area east of the rockies sees around a thousand tornadoes every year, the rest of the world only sees a handful.

The chances of getting fucked over by tornadoes are pretty low. You're more likely to get hit by a car or stabbed by "unruly teenagers".

Your point is kinda valid when talking about those people who keep sticking trailers in the same spots and get hit by them every year.

>>59465701
Is that supposed to be an example of a building that would survive a tornado? That would get fucked up by anything stronger than F3.

There are tornado resistant buildings, they look like concrete domes.
I think they look pretty nice, but most people don't want to live in bunkers.

Actually I was wondering.. Why do americans build their houses from wood ? Why not superior cement like syria ?
Do you know that regular cement block apartments never have rats or even insects , they don't need isolation either .. Also wood has more fire risk, and doesn't stand after an earthquake or a flood..

ITT: people pretend to have architecture and structural engineering degrees

cement blocks would not be structurally sound when building large homes as they are very brittle and would start to crack under the force of their own weight.

It would also disallow for the structure to be in anyway architecturally appealing.

What I think you're looking for is the "concrete dome home", which can be structurally sound at large sizes and is a practical way to build a structure.

Not really. The worst storms only fuck up roofs. And thats because its tiles that are not nailed to the roof with 10 inch nails.

Generally the houses in europe would stay in better condition than the us ones. The question is if it matters?

From what i understand, its easy to rebuild a US house, mainly prefabricated wooden houses. Which fits the US style of life, where you don't necessarily stay for generations in the same house but move when the job requires it.

Its cultural differences and material availability.

Also im not saying a euro house would stay pristine, it would require repairs. But for the price of repairs in EU you could probably build one of those cheap american houses.

>ITT: people pretend to have architecture and structural engineering degrees

You are literally doing the same. I might have only 3 years of architecture education, but hey i work in a concrete plant. Concrete is literally only good for withstanding pressure as long as its pressure in 1 direction only, and not bending them.

Also concrete domes are FAR from practical. Jesus its impractical as fuck actually and pretty fucking expensive.

Do you want practical concrete housing?

Structural elements made of reinforced concrete, and fill the rest with bricks. Cheap, fast, reliable. The rest is up to the area you build in. Every place has issues, either earthquakes, storms, humidity, fires. There is always something, and as an architect its nice to keep that in mind.

>>
>>59468933

We are a tiny as fuck country and have everything except tornadoes. You dont need size for such geographic diversity. You need the right location.

We just happen to be in a place where the alps meet the sea, and where the flatlands meet the alps, also karst or whatever you call it for some fucked up floods or fires, depending on your need.

My point is everywhere you build you have a more likely and a less likely scenario, also harsher and less hars happenings. A tiny earthquake does not warrant building a japan style anti earthquake house, but if you live in earhquake valley they will probably be your first concern.

Also you could build a house like a fucking bunker and still make it comfy as fuck (but that would be quite pricey).

I am disappoint /pol/.

A "brick" house built in 1950 is infinitely more dangerous than one slapped together in TEH CURRENT YEAR for the sole reason that a regulator would come shut a contractor's shit down in a heartbeat if they didn't build it to code. Lead paint, aesbestos, all sorts of dangerous shit in houses in the 50s and 60s.

Want to know why "Fire" departments are doing 95% of their work on EMT calls nowadays? Because there are no fucking fires to put out since buildings are made in such a way as to NOT CATCH ON FUCKING FIRE so easily. They still can obviously, but it aint remotely like it was in the past where shit would go up like a box of matches.

Well yea, we had earthquakes that fall into 8-9 mcs scale, the blizzards in the picture i posted. Floods that ripped houses out and washed them away (i actually helped rebuilding a part of a dam damaged by such a flood here). The record speeds during storms were 150 mph wind gusts.

We dont have hurricanes, as our storms are either just wind and very little rain, or we have less windy extreme rainfalls.

For draughts i cant say much, as i have to agree, our small country with its geographic diversity wont be hit as hard by draughts as its easy to get water elsewhere in an extreme draught than it is for a place like the whole southwest.

But you can trust me that we do not lack extreme weather.

Incidentally, while the need for actual fire services has plummeted, the number of public sector employees working as firefighters has skyrocketed. If government were efficient, we'd have very few firefighters and mostly EMTs and paramedics available for response. BUT firefighters get paid more and the public views them as heroes, so their union (the IAFF) is basically untouchable.

Oh, oh, also people who keep talking about how murrican wood houses are a fire hazzard are literally retarded. Most of the shit is really fucking hard to burn if built to code, as almost all building materials have specific standards they need to adhere too. So the insulation mostly even if made out of paper or wood chips is treated with chemicals that prevent it from burning.

You can even get wooden doors that take hours to burn trough.

Here we have cement walls+insulation+brick+indoor walling+stone facade, so an overall wall thickness can reach 45-50cm easily. Back in the intifada my uncle's house was shilled by a helicopter with .50 caliber and the only rounds that made it through the house were through widows, walls stopped everything.

>with a brick lining at most

the brick used in american "brick houses" is not considered structural, as it is applied after the house has been built. the floors, walls, roof, etc., are supported by the wooden frame, not by the bricks.

some inexpensive houses are built using concrete blocks, in which case they are structural, but bricks never are structural in typical american house construction.

This building was constructed (out of old boats) more than a 100 years before the USA was founded.

And it's still a working pub that's open every day. It's even survived being directly bombed in WWII.

the foreigners in this thread can't grasp a few things:

1. tornado alley is not a specific path where tornadoes come regularly. the average american has never seen a tornado or been threatened by one. america is a huge place with lots of empty spaces.

2. american house construction is fine, and a decently built house will last forever if maintained properly.

>Carpenter
>building homes
Kinda the crux of the issue right there.

>>
>>59467069
>basement
Yeah, about that. Most houses in the "tornado alley" part of the US have no basements. At all. Because there isn't any good way (or at least non-expensive way) to connect the foundation to proper bedrock or whatever in that kind of soil which makes such good farmland. So foundations "float" on the ground. A basement would even float right out of the ground, at the very least causing it to tilt.

wood has its benefits like holding up better in earthquakes, being more breathable, easier to heat, easier to combat mold and so on.

we also make major modifications to our homes fairly regularly by comparison.(adding on.)

but on top of all that, who gives a shit about the building material? i mean as long as its not something poorly suited to your environment do you really care more about it being brick than getting an extra 300 square feet or a more desirable location?

i'd take a wooden 2200 sq ft California split over a typical french brick cuckshed any day.
>>
>>59473310

Because believe it or not, the fact that it uses a wood frame does not make it shitty. As long as they are built to code on a good foundation, they will last hundreds of years. Barring tornadoes or very bad floods.

The odds of being killed or getting property damage from a tornado, even in "tornado alley" are actually very small.
The recent storms in Texas only killed 11 and damaged something like 600 homes. A drop in the bucket compared to how many people inhabit the region.

It would be absolutely retarded to abandon so much fertile, resource rich land just because there's a few severe storms and and then.
On top of that, all you need to survive is a simple storm cellar, the house is insured and can be replaced.
