One of my older brothers is marrying a white South African. Their family has a tough time keeping/finding jobs. Everyone in the family has to hold a job (or two) to earn enough to allow the family to live decently.

The fact that you need to keep what time the power outage in your neighbourhood happens a secret states a lot. That the amount of Black homeless was extremely low. Basically it became financially unsound to exclude what was a majority of the people from utilizing products/services and not having the means to earn money to in turn pay for those products/services previously mentioned. As white people can only purchase and utilize so much of a given product/service. It resulted in people going out of their way even under threats of heavy fines to allow blacks to live a higher standard of life that they in turn would be able to pay for out of their own pocket. Dude this was based on experience from my brother being there directly. Is it like that 24/7 all across the nation? No it isn't, but it is like that enough to be a cause for concern. The family lives in Johannesburg. They are most certainly not rednecks. Although them drinking Coke like it is water is true. It is a sad sight to see too. You have to understand the history of South Africa. Apartheid was set up as a form of job protection for the shitload of poor whites living in the country. Towns used to be literally divided by railway lines with these people living on the 'wrong side of the tracks'.
Nobody knew what the fuck to do with them, so Apartheid was a solution that ensured they had jobs in a large state. Post office, parastatals like Eskom and Iscor etc.
These guys worked for the state and got decent salaries under Apartheid and enjoyed lifestyles comparable, or even better, than your average Western European.
Then Apartheid ended and the civil service was cleared out while the ANC did the exact same thing with black people in an attempt to create a black middle class.
So these guys suddenly lost their elevation in society and it was sink or swim, which is how we ended up with white squatter camps virtually overnight.
They were basically rednecks who never really had elevated culture or aspirations - education, self improvement etc. It was bring back your pay packed, have barbecues and go camping.
To be fair many of them have become small businessmen since the end of Apartheid and have done well with themselves, but there are those who haven't and they tend to bitch twice as hard as anyone about the state of things.
It pisses me off because things here are actually quite bad from a corruption and governance point of view, but when white people start getting hysterical about the crime situation and exagerrating bad aspects of South Africa then it ends up tainting all concerns of white people by association, so as a group we are less likely to be taken seriously when we have genuine grievances.
