I don't think there's anyway to avert it now - it's so ingrained into the national consciousness, in our education, in our media, that there's really no reverting it. We are to a certain extent but for various reasons. For myself, being a northerner, I'm not much of a federalist because Yukoners have always existed on the peripheral. Most Canadians, including those in government, don't really care about us. Which is fine, but that sort of attitude doesn't exactly encourage federalism and nationalism.
I think immigrants have an easier time fitting in with the prescribed national identity of Canada (which these days is basically multiculturalism, anyways), but less so on the regional/provincial/territorial level. How many immigrants would say they have as much pride in being, say, Ontarian as someone who descends from Loyalists? How much pride does a British immigrant have being a Yukoner as someone who descends from miners during the gold rush?
And I'd say, generally, many of us "old stock" Canadians sorta feel as though our parents' generation sold this country down river. A lot of young people (young men, more accurately) feel that they never even got the chance to experience an authentic Canada because multiculturalism has been instituted as a national policy before they were born. I sympathise with this to a large extent.
