Basically hospitals hike up the prices insanely because they know they can usually bill multi-million dollar insurance companies for the cost. The insurance companies in turn then send in their lawyers and dispute every single charge/cost. Hospitals, knowing the insurance companies will dispute every charge, purposefully inflate the price way over reasonable amount not expecting to get paid all of it, the insurance companies then dispute the charges... and you can see where this is going. Basically have a "cold war" between health care providers and insurance companies constantly disputed and inflating charges so nothing is at all within market value.

This is a near impossibility here because the same place will literally charge difference amounts depending on your insurance provider/plan. There have been many known instances of providers charging way more for people under good insurance plans such as BCBS because they are such a huge company and can afford to pay it. Which then leads to situations like I mentioned above. Also many places will refuse to even quote you before hand. It's not like any other good or service where you can go, get quotes and compare costs/quality and purchase accordingly.
