If it was, it was extremely poorly thought out. People had already been pointing out that most of the shootings were happening at CCL prohibited zones like schools. In fact, Sandy Hook inspired a relaxation of gun laws, here in Texas it played a huge roll in getting college campus concealed carry legalized.
The point being, if the feds were going to go through the effort of faking a mass killing to promote gun control, they would have been smarter about it.

It was far too ineffective to have an objective such as that, Lanza didn't even use his own gun, he used his mother's. If the goal was to impede weapons ownership, they would have made him buy his own legal firearm to prove the current system was ineffective. Instead, he just illegally procured his mother's rifle and used that, something gun control could have never prevented in the first place.

Producing in depth, quality journalism and investigative reporting is a lot of work. Somebody has to get all those photos, videos, testimonies, etc. But the kind of stuff you remember about Columbine was journalism before social media. Before twitter and smartphones and things like that.
