They're utterly unable to understand that gun ownership has no correlation with violent crime, that 'mass shootings' use trumped up stats from gang shootings and are such a minute cause of death in the US you're in more danger from getting killed in car crash, and my favorite, is that they don't understand the purpose of the 2nd amendment and believe it would be impossible for us to defend ourselves from government tyranny, so obviously we should just lay down our arms. The worst are the australianas, who for some reason want to take away MY guns and think taht our countries are identical.
I'm just starting to shut down on the subjects, why even argue? California has the fiercest fucking gun control in the states and that certainly didn't stop a shooting there. And if the government tries to take my fucking guns they'll have to pry them from my cold dead fucking hands.

Which is hilarious since California has the most restrictive gun laws in the 50 states.
Most people only know of their safe, white, middle class existence without the need for self defense where guns are essential.

Use this argument: It's not about having guns so much as learning tovdefend yourself. Meaning use whatever you have available, knives or even MMA plus you get /fit/
If everyone had the means then people could protect each other in an emergency while they wait for police. Turn the conversations from a "paranoid" mindset to one about personal responsibility. Would they trust a hoise alarm, that doesn't do anything except make noise, or a weapon to protect them at home. If you can convince them of that much then they'll be more gun tolerant.
I've been doing this for over a year with people and it works. Take them to the range for fun and you'll see how suddenly receptive to guns they become.
