USSR economy's productivity was far lower than in the West. Basically, USSR has failed another industrial revolution in robotics and domestic electronics which is why many of his industries failed to compete on the global market once the Iron curtain was removed.

Apart from GDP per capita people had socialized healthcare, education, vacations, music classes and generally things you now have to pay with what you make. Less consumer products though.
