The only reason they think they are open to it at all is because they don't adhere to logic, and their faith is absolute in whatever they were taught. These certainly have some truth to them. What impresses me the most is their obsession with empathy. By never questioning its value, they've turned it into some sort of buzzfeeling. They never question its value even when it could be harmful.
It also helps that there are subjects dedicated to advancing these politics. Social sciences that express them in a scientific manner. History courses that apply moral sentiment to past human action. Art and Identity Studies courses using pathos to make you feel for supposedly oppress groups.
Smart people are able to say that the earth is round because the ocean visibly curves; that the holocaust was real due to overwhelming physical evidence, witness statements, and the bloody obvious opinions of Nazi leadership at the time; that climate change is a reality due to ice core samples and global weather observations; and that blacks as a group have lower IQs than baseline in most countries.
What's more, they might come to learn through argument that the world is actually a slightly squashed oval and not a perfect sphere; that some of the individual stories of supposed holocaust victims are laughably bad, and that Germany was hardly alone in causing widespread pain and death amongst civilians, but became as popularised as it did due to prominent Jewish-American public figures; that climate change models consistently overestimate the impact of climate change due to pervasive bias in the field; and that some specific groups of blacks and some specific black people are more intelligent than certain white groups and certain white people.

What you consider reasonable is completely arbitrary from an objective perspective. "Reasonable" just means this idiot will move the goalposts when necessary to avoid any real dialogue i.e. any subject that might make him question his "faith". He says he likes "debate" but how can you debate if you're unwilling to talk about ideas you're opposed to?
A better argument for why some things are not worth discussing is because there's so much evidence supporting one conclusion. In other words, no matter how much you discuss the topic you will always come to the same conclusion and learn nothing.
Proposition: Earth is round.
We can prove this with multiple methods such as

He assumes that the conclusion has already been proven. I imagine he will refuse to look at the evidence to see if the conclusion actually is correct because he believes the conclusion is already correct. Then he'll call you a bigot as he runs off into his echo chamber.
Every argument needs to have supporting evidence no matter how obvious the correct conclusion is.
