Honestly Carlin had the same shit happen to him as his idol Lenny Bruce. His act eventually morphed from stand up comedy to a philosophical/political rant and both of them just ended up bitter old fucks near the end of their lives. Near the end of Bruce's life he was on stage ranting about the police and his obscenity trials rather than telling jokes and he lost his humor.
