Does terrorism work? How successful have terrorists, foreign and domestic been? Morality aside, is it a useful tactic?
A lot of the colonial independence wars in the 50-60-70ies were fought with terrorism. Israel for example gained its independence from the UK after they repeatedly committed terrorist attack on British citizens in Palestine. That same movement later became the Mossad.

McVeigh managed to get the Feds to rethink using excessive force like they did at Ruby Ridge and Waco. The PLO managed to get international Palestinian recognition. Mandela managed to become President of South Africa and an international symbol of "peace" (lmao)

Apparently so, provided a group is willing to engage in terrorism for what could be decades. If you had a very small group, then terrorism would probably be the best choice for political violence. Unless, of course, you were in a position to cut the head of the government off like Lenin did in 1917 (The Bolsheviks were an extremely small group for what they did, and really only gained power because they were able to take over the central government buildings and take prisoners). In most countries nowadays, you'd be hardpressed to be able to take out the entire government with a single coup in a single city.
I guess it's a toss up, though. Not all terrorists succeed. For instance, the KKK, the IRA, and the Basques have all generally not accomplished any of their goals.
It's successful when it comes to striking fear into people. Not much else I can think of

most recent case of the terrorists winning I can think of was the Madrid train bombings in 2005 which were intended to get the Spanish government to pull its troops out of Iraq and they did exactly that after the attack.
Its easy to forget that they were the third largest participant in that war after America and Britain.

Sometimes fighting a war works - if you have mass support and enough fire power to win the war. That's different than terrorism.

Just wrote an essay about why fighting terrorism does not work.
Its nearly impossible to fight causing serious unrest in your own country in the form of restricting or revealing laws. Country basicly commits cultural genocide to combat the threat.
