There was a study were some runner that were used to run with shoes ended up running using the tip of ther feet to land instead of the heel. They made a change in gear at some point while changing speed were they went from landing with their heel to with their tip of the foot. The results were that landing with your heel was harsh to your knees, specially if your leg was streched, and that people who run for more than 8 hours per day did not ran like that. I can't find the studies, but they talked and compared the way common people run and the way some tribe that was know to run for hours and hours used to keep their speed and knees while running for so long.
