Because he has politicized some of the major ones to push his views which attracts media attention, which in-return, influences the public. When you make mass shooters out to be the sickest fuckers in society, the anti-social aggressive self-hating mentally ill people out there will find an attraction in becoming them just to spite society. Mass shootings being this fad started during the 90's when there was a revival of gun control measures by the Clinton admin, before that it was serial killers that used to be the topic of discussion on week-day News channels that the media liked to obsess over, which in-return, caused those same type of people to romanticize becoming one and outdoing the previous famed ones by making their methods of preying on people more gruesome.
It can also be observed of why there's Western white and black people, who don't have a background history with Islam, going overseas to join ISIS-- because society has pushing them recently has being the most malevolent entity in the world today, which anti-social and social-contrarians will naturally find an attraction to that.
