It's really easy to kill someone with a gun. But a knife? That takes more effort. The idea is that, although we can never totally eliminate the causes of murderous feelings, we can do things to reduce people's ability to act on those feelings. Gun control helps towards that. So does better public education, less poverty, better employment opportunities, social services for people in need of psychiatric care, etc. etc. It has to be a multi-pronged approach. Just throwing more guns at the problem, without addressing the root causes, just makes the matter worse.
