anyone else here default on a bunch of credit cards? I did in like 2012. They sent letters for like 2-3 years then most of them went away. One still has another 6 months or so until they can't sue me anymore but its for 11k dollars so they might try.
Is it normal to not get sued for not paying? I thought for sure I'd have to pay one day but it seems like they just gave me free money.

i read that in my state they can only persue your debt for up to 4 years after your last payment to them and after 7 it will be off your record...
i hope it's true cus i'm at like year 6 atm and my credit score has gone up like 200 points since a few years ago cus i'm still paying my current credit card on time.
so yeah, read your state laws and dont make any contact with your creditors unless you care about having good credit sometime soon

For 11k they might but for less it's usually not worth it and they anticipate it will just chase you into bankruptcy.
Look up the exemptions in your state. You might have less than they can get anyway, i.e. you're judgment proof

If they see you've defaulted on other cards and never paid, they might decide that you're unlikely to pay them either and not bother spending money on court costs going after someone who they think can't pay.
Do be careful applying for credit in the future. Some credit cards sneak small print in their agreements that if you open a credit card with them, that you agree to pay off old debts that are past the date they can sue you for. Since you're agreeing to it, your first statement for the new credit card ends up having all the old debt on it. There are companies that specialize in this, buying up seemingly dead debt, sending that person an offer for a new card, and then bringing the old debt back to life if they don't read the fine print and sign up.
Just went through my old paperwork, I maxed out 22,300 dollars worth of cards and never paid.
I actually sort of feel like a piece of shit now. I knew things got out of hand but thats a nice chunk of change.
I am judgement proof and if they check my credit report they'll laugh. They'll see shit like a comcast bill I never paid, a gas bill I never paid. Only thing I'm concerned about is getting my bank account closed. I'm self employed and don't want to have to pay my rent with money orders or prepaid visa cards.
I'm just getting back on my feet now. If this country was a little less strict on repayment but extended the statute of limitations I'd pay it back in full. Also the credit score system incentives you to do what I did and just ignore debts until they go away.

OP here, I used a card responsibly for 5 years. I had an issue where my landlord took me and my roomates to court after one kid stopped paying and I was so worried about my credit score it kept me up at night.

No it doesnt, the scoring system encourages you to carry some debt (under 40% of your limits.) and make regular payments while also giving the bankers their sweet, sweet interest.

My brother recently went wild and opened like 150K+ in all sorts of credit cards (store, visa, mastercard, etc). I think his plan is to just max them out and tell the banks to fuck themselves. He also has no property or anything so they can't take anything from him.
