To keep niggers in the ghetto.

Generally, a lack of sidewalks, bus lines, or other mass transit helps to keep them from encroaching into other areas.
>>
>>57314024
It probably originally did but they were removed when they widened that road.

We just drive our scooters onto the roads.

This also the road is wider so more people can quickly drive through and gtfo the ghetto if they go there accidentally.

because it's apparently in the desert part of commiefornia. nobody is walking around in 150 degree heat.

Everybody itt take note of this post. The human roach issue is SO BAD in california that there cannot be sidewalks or else the human roaches will ruin everything for everyone. Think of some major issues that are parallel to this. Now think about the fact that this failing liberal state, has the most sway in presidential elections, and it cant handle sidewalks.

More to the point why do they call it a sidewalk?
Its a fucking pavement.
Americans simplify everything linguistically.
If they didn't call it a sidewalk you'd find Americans meandering down the middle of the road, confused and delirious.

If they didn't call it "horse back riding" as opposed to "horse riding" you would find Americans riding on the horses neck or swinging about from the tail.

I'm basically ripping of a Michael Mcintyre bit but its pretty accurate.

Public transport is for the poor and disabled. Literally. Anyone who can afford a car and drive does, and cars are cheap. I mean, even our teenagers own cars. I know lower-working class people who own multiple regular driving cars and a custom racecar for driving at the track.

It kind of ruins the beauty of the language though
Pavement is a nice French derived word. Which in turn is derived from Latin.

Sidwalk is ugly and clunky, its like calling the road a middledrive.
>>
There are sidewalks all over. What I hate the most is why the fuck to bikers insist on biking in the road in a suburb, when there is a completely empty sidewalk just a few feet away. I can understand if you are in an inner city, but there is no reason to not ride on a sidewalk in a suburb
>>
>>57314024

because californians don't like when people walk near their property. also car companies wanted to make it hard for people to walk places and to use public transportation. they wanted people to buy cars.
>>
>>57317894

Bicycles are classified as moving vehicles in most cities in the world and therefore they're supposed to be operated/used on the god damned roads.

IT'S CALLED A SIDEWALK SO PEOPLE CAN WALK ON IT AND NOT GET HIT BY MOVING VEHICLES YOU STUPID FUCK.
>>
>>57317741

Most Americans don't even actually live in the cities. Greater Metropolitan areas counting suburbs and rural maybe, but most don't even go near the actual cities on a regular basis.
>>
>>57317455
mmm

Buy pavement means "trodden down floor" from the latin "pavimentim".
Whereas road derives from anglo saxon influences , the word "rad" or "ride" meaning a journey on horseback implying that it is for vehicles as opposed to pedestrians.

For the most part its great but when people have no way of safely traveling without investing in an expensive item that continues to cost money and needs to be registered, insured, taxed and needs a licence to operate the people have lost out.

Public transport doesn't work when you have spread out cities like in the US. It would be impossible to design routes to get everyone where they needed to be all hours of the day without requiring either a fair bit of walking or alot of half-empty buses. It ends up being alot more practical for everyone to just have their own car. Also walking even a short distance in Florida in the middle of summer is pretty awful for anyone not used to it.
>>
>>57319609
>but its worth travelling too for the bars, shops, saturday slags etc

Yeah, we don't need to go to the city for bars, shops, and sluts.

The original meanings don't matter when words have acquired new modern meanings. Trying to claim something doesn't make sense because you're choosing to ignore the modern meaning of the words, you're just be a retarded (and incorrect) pedant.

>you could just arbitrarily attach random definitions to any fucking grunt you like.
Words and their meanings are inherently arbitrary. They are sequences of sounds we associate meaning to in order to make language. There is no intrinsic meaning to these sounds, they are arbitrary by definitions.

These arbitrary meanings are fluid and constantly changing with time. Pointing to the original arbitrary meanings of words before and ignoring the modern arbitrary meanings is stupid.

Basically your argument is
>American english is dumb because I don't like it.

Neat. Typical britbong bullshit.

Why don't you go try to figure out how many syllables are in aluminum.
>>
>>57326235
Actually there may be some intrinsic origin to our language.
We know that many cultures across the world share similar sounds for similar things.
Such as mmm sounds for the mother
and ddd orr ppp sounds for the father.

Nobody really knows or understands how language developed into what it is today.

But there is a point in keeping words as they are to some degree.
One example that I can think of straight away is the word breakfast. Alone it is a random sound that has a meaning attached. If you analyse the word though and study its origins its is actually descriptive of the act. It implies that you are breaking a period of fasting. It is the first meal you eat after waking up.

Pavement is the same in that respect.
It means the same in England as it did in ancient Latium, Italy. Its evolved slightly, but the definition is the same.

have you ever seen anyone get any sort of ticket for riding their bike on a sidewalk?

Hell I visited my cousin in Tokyo for 2 weeks a while back and I saw people riding old fashioned bikes on the sidewalk all the time. If the nips can figure out how to do it around fucking TOKYO, I think some suburban faggots here should realize clogging up the road for no reason is stupid

It was named by the English Chemist Sir Humphrey Davis actually.
Who also named other classics, such as potassium, sodium, magnesium etc

He originally had three different names but decided in Aluminium officially in 1812.

It wasn't until 1925 that the American Chemical Society adopted Aluminum.

>Actually there may be some intrinsic origin to our language.
Wrong.

Even if every human on earth spoke the same language with the same dialect and pronunciation does not give the meaning associated to those sounds intrinsic meaning. The meaning is arbitrarily assigned by our species.

>But there is a point in keeping words as they are to some degree.
Even British english has morphed and evolved significantly over the centuries. Claiming American English is somehow worse because it began changing along a different branched chain than British English serves only to reflect your particular anglocentric point of view.

Essentially you don't like it because you're not used to it because of where you live. Which means absolutely nothing and makes you a retarded pedant picking things apart meaninglessly simply because they are unfamiliar to you.

Pavement is a surface that is paved. This is a completely reasonable definition given the etymology.

The fact that you take issue with the idea of the self descriptive of "sidewalk" yet you actually cite breakfast as a usefully meaningful term are hilarious.

That's not a side walk. It's the Public Right of Way, aka, the 6 feet of land that isn't yours but you have to pay for anyway.

This is wrong. Davey's called it Aluminum in 1812 after initially calling alumium.

>Chemical Philosophy
>This substance appears to contain a peculiar metal, but as yet Aluminum has not been obtained in a perfectly free state, though alloys of it with other metalline substances have been procured sufficiently distinct to indicate the probable nature of alumina.

The Aluminum spelling was further solidified when used in Websters dictionary in 1828.

Aluminium was created by the British after the fact that didn't like the real spelling and insisted on inserting an extra syllable for no reason.

British people don't spell or say Aluminum correctly, per the name given by the British discoverer of the element.

Deal with it. You say words wrong because of your geographical location. Your pronunciation and spelling of the element Al are not original nor correct. thus you have no room to talk about American English and the etymology of their use of words.

I live in San Bernardino and I find these neighborhoods without sidewalks to be weird. Turns out thy're old ass neighborhoods from the old orange grove days where houses were further apart and nobody walked anywhere.

Now San Bernardino is bankrupt because of 30 years of greedy politicians, because nobody pays attention to local elections, and there is no money for roads - let alone sidewalks.
