Go into wooden structures, then flooring, then use the concrete block flooring to build your wall. That's what I did. You can build it into the ground. There are points where the height raises, but there are small steps you can make which sole that problem. Just go through having each companion except the dog to get their perks, then take the dog since he's the best.
The dog is the best, because lone wanderer works with him, so you get 25% less damage taken, 25% more damage dealt, and 100 extra carry capacity.
Companions in this game never save your ass other than taking one mini nuke for you and any of the companions can do that for you.
The AI for them is just too shit for them to be good otherwise.
