Ya know I often ponder this shit myself. My father was a part time Dad. He tried really he did. But my Mom is a narcissist that managed to spoil me and neglect me at the same time. By the time he was willing to take a more proactive role in my life it was already too late. Often she did a lot of bullshit that further turned him off to the idea of even trying anymore.
Is this empathy that makes me stay right now? No. According to my therapist I'm a sociopath. Yes I've been to jail, twice as a matter of fact. Yes I'm pretty selfish and lazy. I've had a shit upbringing and a lot of factors were involved not just my parents' but their parents and where we lived and yes socioeconomics played a big role in what I am today as well.
Honestly the biggest thing that keeps me around is that my wife is imho the best human being I've ever met and my life. Time and again she has gone above and beyond to bring me joy and fulfillment in my life. She enables my bullshit which we're both working on. She gives me zero stress and is pretty much my yes woman. My biggest fan and cheerleader. Having a woman like this in my life does make the annoyances of child-rearing more worth it to me. I am more forward thinking than a lot of my counterparts. My wife's Dad was murdered in a nursing home. Having children and raising them right is a good insurance policy against the undignified and lonely death that awaits those who reside in nursing homes.
Even still yes I've been tempted many a time to go out for a pack of cigarettes and never come back. For now I stay and so far the children are 5 and 3yrs old. They better hope their Mom lives at least until my eldest is an adult because if she dies they're going to live with either my Mom or brother, I don't feel bad admitting it.
