Knives aren't toys. If he had stabbed one of them, even if the cops ultimately overpowered him, there would have been lasting injuries, possible fatal. In a melee fight with a knifeman, there's no way to guarantee that you won't be stabbed, no matter how good you are.

Guys, come on. The British got it right. Police are there, primarily, to maintain order. Having them dressed up like they've just come out of a commando training course sends absolutely the wrong message.
The British soldier was also an officer of the law, retaining some power in enforcing peace. But police should be entirely removed from the sort of soldiering look and feel.
