Well, one could easily argue that a white shooter is affiliated with a lot of groups- their religion, their gender, their sexuality, their high school, their college- the list goes on. It seems that we throw Muslims into a bin and blame them, despite being able to easily do so for any other person- saying it's all christians when it's a christian, or all atheists when it's an atheist.
I think the only critical difference is not the attachment, but the motivation being derived from the group or affiliation with that group.
