Until big pharma produces drugs with new mechanisms of action.

Unfortunately that's expensive and it's much easier for drug companies to SLIGHTLY change the current MoA, make a "new" drug, and push it for lods e mone.

I also hope your dad had more of a point that "we're fugged xXdDDdD" and focused on the fact we can handle antibiotic resistance in microorganisms the same way we deal with pesticide resistance.

The problem is that almost all antibiotics derive from other organisms, and are thus limited. That and the fact that big pharma is far more invested in the cash cows of cancer and HIV drugs.
>>
>>57252119
Sorry guys I was away.
Yeah there's nothing you can do. America and China are the biggest problems for this, for more than one reason.

Buy organic food. Support farmers who don't feed their animals antibiotics.

>>57252301
Pharmaceutical companies have no interest in producing antibiotics.
>>
>>57252501
Yes, the WHO are going fucking insane and my father was told that it's become so serious that it's now prime minister level seriousness.

In the UK or something we have 7 different committees dedicated to deciding where funding goes.
Antibiotic resistance was the first time all 7 committees unanimously have voted to fund significantly.
>>
Is there an ETA on when this would begin to affect our society in a significant way?
>>
>>57252301
Also, my father generally works on mercury and copper resistance in microbials.
He has unique access to a farm where they are probably the most strictly kept and maintained farm in the country because of university protocols.

He's seen unprecedented levels of resistance to even last-line-of-defence cephalosporins and almost complete resistance to conventional tricyclics.
>>57252839
It already is. Look at methycillin resistant RSA. That's killed many.

It won't affect countries like Australia, UK, and sensible European countries like France for a while, because we have really cut back on our antibiotic use, but China is already fucked tbqh family.

He's worked on some cool projects before, though.
He once worked for the UK "military" I suppose, where they took air samples 24/7 from around the UK and analysed them because all governments around the world want to know if they're under biological attack before it happens.

Massively. But also, people don't realise that dumping hazardous waste into our oceans does far more than kill off wildlife.
It's also a breeding ground for microbials to get resistant to heavy metals like mercury, which means they'll be almost unkillable if we don't work hard to stop it soon.

On alcohol: don't use like 90+% alcohol solution.
The most effective IPA concentration for disinfection is 50-70%.
Sounds weird, just trust me. Otherwise the membrane around microbials is actually hardened too quickly with ~90% alcohol and it doesn't kill anything.

>>
>>57253611
Not much, really. It's retarded American and Chinese farmers who are desperate for profits literally throwing antibiotics into your animal feed.

The problem is, there are only so many ways antibiotics work which are safe for humans, and even if antibiotics are "animal use only", they still work the same way.

And yes, MRSA (methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus) hit UK hospitals a couple of years ago. Methicillin is a last resort form of penicillin. If you're on methicillin usually... then you're fucked. It's reserved for the WORST infections, and SA was resistant to it.

It's only going to get worse, too, btw.

What really amazes me is how people act when they're sick. I remember my university days. It's was a period when we are preparing for our exams, so it's somewhat good to go and study, but you can easily do it all at home. But no. We had shits coming in with a high fever and coughing on fucking everyone. A week later when exams do hit, it's 2/3 of the auditorium with the same fucking symptoms because some chavs can't stay in bed for 2 days.

Same for my workplace. working in an IT sector, you can easily take your work and do it at home. But no again. People keep having this mentality that they just can't get sick right now, and even if they have a fever they will keep going until they practically faint. Then not only do you have to clean up their mess because their work is of worse quality than heavily intoxicated, but they also get most of the other people sick.

Or better yet, I know a fuckton of people who take antibiotics for like 3 days until they supposedly feel better, then stop, because "it's bad for my body to keep taking them for any longer, i'll get better on my own and i'm ready to go around town ;^)". Ye, thanks for making your strain fucking immune to that particular antibiotic.

I'm just happy it's been 10 years since the last time I was really really sick. I get a small fever and a sore throat every once or twice a year. I instantly take 3-5 days off if needed and spend 99% of the time in bed, getting better, drinking tea, eating fruit, garlic, getting lots of sleep. That's all there is to it.

I'm not saying antibiotics shouldn't be used, we really need them, but these days you can cough once and you will be prescribed a full weeks course. Most of the time without any blood work, "just to be sure" and it ends up being fucking nothing.

Medicine abuse that leads to fucking the entire world up really boils my blood.

the general purpose, low-dosing of antibiotics on animals that arent even sick needs to be outlawed imo, its a serious public safety issue. seriously, its standard practice to feed them constant low doses because it increases growth rates.

We're just talking about infections. This won't be ebola 2.0. It'll be a shitty way to die because you'll get sweaty, hot, run a temp, and get septicaemia and die.

Also.

Crush garlic with olive oil and rub your nose. Instantly relieves a running nose.

Honey mixed with fresh fruits and nuts, add full lemon slices. Grate some lemon peel. Eat that shit.

Full meals if possible with lots of extra fruits.

Tea, you can mix it up since it gets hard to stomach. Helps you get lots of fluids, herbal tea is the fucking bomb.

I eat garlic quite abit, helps alot with a sore throat. Garnet fruit is amazing when you have a sore throat, especially with those small puss things.

Don't go around town when sick, actually stay in bed. Rub your feet with spirit or rinse them in a hot bowl of water, then ut on some socks and back to bed.

There you go, you just cured yourself of 95% of illnesses that an average person will get. From simple a cold to the flu.

Don't take any fever medicine for anything below 37.7. If it stays like that for 3 days without getting better at all. Then start thinking about actual medicine, your body probably can't cope. Obviously you need some common sense. If you're coughing up blood, puking and on a high fever, or even a low one but still suffering from unusual pain, jsut get a check up.

It just baffles me how people waste their time at the doctors office when all they have is a sneeze and then proceed to die and ignore everything, when they're leaking blood out of every orifice.

>>57253387
Hydrogen peroxide is easier to get, cheaper and has the same effect. Rinse that cut good in it, and you're set to go.

>>57255069
Ye, I didn't touch on that subject. We are already getting huge doses of antibiotics from everywhere we eat. And I agree, it should be heavily regulated on how antibiotics are used on livestock and how it's handled afterwards. Since it just gets into the soil anyways and we are boned from crops.
Need to tackle both problems, both antibiotics from food and general antibiotic abuse.

>>57255354
It wouldn't.
It's cheaper for farmers to just feed antibiotics to them and prevent them getting infections.
Because animals are designed now to grow retardedly quickly, it doesn't matter to them if the animals feel like shit from the constant antibiotic use.
The honest answer is that giving them antibiotics is cheaper than taking the losses from them getting infections and dying. That's the problem.
And antibiotic companies aren't going to increase prices because there's 200 other pharma companies happy to undercut them.

There's only a few ways to fix the whole problem that we can work out, btw:
Massively reduce population
Make feeding of antimicrobials illegal (if constantly fed, like we have atm)
Stop using capitalism
Have pharma companies that aren't profit-run.

>>57255423
Of course.
The fact is, that pharma companies don't want to make any antibiotics, ever.

Reasons:
Expensive to develop
They're worth nothing when they're being sold
They only work for so long
They have poor shelf life
Costs billions of $$ to safety test
Once patent runs out, the pills are worthless

The whole "pharma wants you on pills for life" meme isn't wrong. Pharma companies, like every other corporation, exists to give shareholders money. They're not in it for the human race to get better.
Giving someone 28 tablets to cure a condition that otherwise would send them to hospital for 3 weeks with supportive care just isn't more profitable.

Unfortunately it isnt just the weak and the old who die. The 1918 flu epidemic infected half a billion and killed about 100 million, most of them the fit young and strong. It did not impact the elderly much. In 1918–1919, 99% of pandemic influenza deaths in the US occurred in people under 65, and nearly half in young adults 20 to 40 years old.

When you think about it, isn't it actually insanely profitable to not release any new antibiotics just for that reason. I can only imagine how many people would die from the common cold, plus the profit of what you stated later in your post.

If you have a cut that has got infected or you want to prevent an infection - Make a very salty water solution in a bucket, make the water as hot as you can tolerate (obviously don't burn yourself). Stick said limb into bucket for 15-30 mins up to twice a day. It will draw out the nasty stuff.
Optionally, add some TCP/Surgical Spirit/Dettol (don't but it in for as long if you add these).

Eat, eat, eat! Don't move if you've got an infection. Eat carby foods whilst you're ill. Eat bland but healthy things like rice pudding, potato, bread, pasta etc. Follow with fruit, fruit fruit and more fruit.

It's not so much about what you do whilst you have the infection, and more about how you live your life.
Eat well. Don't fast. Eat at least 3 meals a day (5 is actually preferable).

Lots of veggies, lots of fruit, and lots of berries and nuts. (not fried or salted).

Exercise is very important, as this helps with circulation.

Don't let this kinda stuff take over your life. Everyone needs antibiotics from time to time, just don't take them often.

No. Like I said, most don't work for that long, as they almost all work the same way.
Also, think about how many other antibiotics are available.
It's currently not worth their time to make them.

what about antibiotics taken for skin conditions ie. doxycycline, taken daily, is this the worst thing one can do?
>>
>>57256427
Yes. Any use of antibiotics is bad, because you're just shitting out resistant bacteria which goes to a sewage plant which spreads it.

>bacteriophage treatment will become a thing in western medicine in your lifetime
>people will act as if it was groundbreaking and soviets didn't do that shit 70 years ago.

>Any reports or general approved reasoning why healthy and young died, rather than the elderly?
Because the young were on the front of the war, where environmental and sanitary conditions were awful and where people were packed all the time, while the old were in cities and had access to correct health services. Also, the immune system is mostly based on training your body, so the older you are, the more likely your body will have been trained for a specific illness.

Wow this is one misinformed and shit infograph.

You can't even get bacteria from an animal that had been cooked, you would have to be eating its shit or consume infected tissue raw.

Also, stop importing akmeds and niggers with their antibiotics-resistant tubercolosys. Problem almost solved.

Aren't most e.coli contaminations from vegetables and such? I'm pretty sure he's right the only problem is it's relatively common for things like vegetables to get contaminated with bacteria
>>
>>57259816
No, most E. coli contaminations come from badly cooked pork meat.

Is your dad Paul Nurse?

Yeah we are fucked desu senpai
My PhD was in virology, but I attended a lot of general microbiology conferences. Unfortunately antibiotic resistance is like climate change. People recognise its a problem, but until we are at the stage where the shit has really hit the fan we just wont do anything.
