Personally I haven't read all of these books, but I can very much recommend Steppenwolf.
Hesse is the only Swiss writer to get a Nobel prize in literature and I think this is probably his best book.
Other than that, Dostoevsky is amazing, Camus and Kafka are pretty good too.
