Researchers in Nunavut and Alaska wear short sleeved shirts during summer. Keep in mind that yh average temperature during summer in the Canadian Arctic is 10 °C (50 °F) and last for less than 60 days. It can go down to −50 °C (−58 °F) without windchill during winter.

It's a weather station and signals intelligence base. When you see maps of US military based in foreign countries, some of them are based at Alert, since it is the most advanced based before reaching Russia. 100% serious. Keep in mind that they couldn't just drink melted snow because it requires too much energy to be warmed by body heat once ingested, which is dangerous in that climate. They also essentially lived in a desert, so there wasn't a lot of precipitation anyway. In the summer, they could drink glacial runoff, but snow has problems apart from being too cold like being contaminated with dirt, bacteria, and animal excrement.

>>57246239
I watched a lot of Inuit movies and read a lot about their history. I know they used seal oil in their traditional lamps, but that doesn't explain how they were able to ignite it. I read that they used bow drills but where did they even get the wood for making those? The Inupiat in Alaska sometimes got driftwood from the ocean, which they also used to build summer tends, but inland Inuit don't have access to wood.

I'm not from Alberta. I've only been to Canada a handful of times.

Did you know that Inuit used to leave hunted seals a cup of water as an offering and as a thank you for its sacrifice? They believed that there was some half women, half seal creature that would get upset and run away and disappear with the seals if they didn't cherish every kill.

Wrong. That's why you can't eat unmelted snow. melting snow into water makes it warm and above your internal temperature, like tea.
>>

you could melt snow just by putting it on a leaf or a shell or something and either doing nothing or exhaling onto it or sleeping on it or any number of things

i dont know how they did it but it doesnt seem difficult

Baffin Island is awesome but it freaks me out a little because of how massive it is. I think that general location is where Igulik was and where the tale of Artanarjuat takes place. Nunavut is mysterious as hell. Inuit had an amazing culture. Shame they're drunkards and freeloaders now.
>>
>>57246509
>>57246532
I heard that melted snow tastes like cat piss though.

What did they do about chapped lips? I heard they sometimes used whale blubber. What about chapped assholes? When I was in college, I ran into chapped butthole for the first time in my life. It was so incredibly painful and I had to use lotion on my butt every day for several months.

Did they all just shit and piss in one area of the igloo when it was too cold outside? They were resourceful, I somehow doubt that they lived in their own shit and filth although I might have read that they didn't hesitate to just piss in their pants sometimes when they were indoors.

Westerners slay me. They are the birthplace of Canada's socialist party the NDP. When they were poor dirt farmers trying to make a living out of shitty infertile ground they came up with the Social Credit party so they could tell Ontario to share. They poke a hole in the ground and oil money come gushing out. They become rock solid conservatives. Oil prices drop and they vote in a socialist NDP provincial government.
>>
>>57247152
I'll check it out.
Have you seen Tree of the Wooden Clogs? It moves at the pace of life from a couple hundred years ago. Very weird effect.
>>
>>57247177
Well they could drink it once it was heated up to room temperature obviously but that's basic biology. They had a massive caloric intake because it helped them stay warm. Drinking ice cold water negates all of that though. If you're living in -58 temperatures, even if you're inside a 40 degree igloo, drinking ice cold water is dangerous.

Plus there are still those health concerns I mentioned. There's a reason why people don't drink still water. Bacteria still exist in the tundra, as do animal feces.
>>
>>57244751
>shit hole needs to be purged

Fellow Ontariofag here OP, but an honest question - if we purge Alberta, who is going to pay for our 120 billion dollar infrastructure plan for our province? Alberta taxes are high as fuck and contribute a lot to equalization payments, so if we purge Alberta, are you comfortable paying for the plan yourself?

It'd about 10,000 dollars a person in Ontario, assuming everyone could pay. Not everyone can afford a thousand a year, so expect to pay more than others.

Manitoba. A complete shithole. Winnipeg is the violent crime capital of the country. In the summer it is a mosquito infested hell hole and in the winter the winds blow at 100 kph. Why the fuck would anybody live there.

Also
>shitty infertile ground
not very true my man
>>
>>57247345
To support your theory, I also think that while seals largely swam in the Arctic Ocean, some of the seal holes might have actually been inland. I didn't study seal biology but there could have been freshwater seal holes in the winter over frozen lakes/rivers. Seals would be able to find them even if they were covered in snow and ice, and then they used their sled dogs to sniff out the seal holes.

I wonder if they ever felt bad killing seals. Some species are ugly and ferocious as fuck, but some seals are pretty docile and nice looking.

Seal is pretty much their lifeblood, well for the Inuits that are still doing traditional stuff. They are getting rarer and rarer now.
>>
>>57247540
Yeah I know that they had a special relationship with seal. Like I wrote above, I know that they used to leave a cup of water next to hunted seals as a ritualistic offering.

The thing I like about Inuit and Native Americans is that while they could be proud hunters, they never took the kill for granted. They killed quickly and used every part of the animal possible. Despite all the different tribes, a lot of them had the same religious belief that they would have bad karma if they didn't respect the kill.

I know Inuit respected seals but I don't think I could ever hunt them. They're good animals. I don't blame the Inuit though, you gotta do what you need to survive.

That's basically what Calgary is like, at least the Northern part.
>>
>>57251201
Lived in Calgary for most of my life.
Pros:
Cleanest city in the world
Lots of jobs for very good pay
Very close to the Alberta side of the Rocky Mountains (most beautiful nature ever if you're into that shit)

Cons:
Literally no soul to the city
Zero public transit or pedestrian only zones. It makes it super anti social. You drive directly to wherever you are going and then drive to the next place after. There's no people mingling and socializing or walking around
No culture or art
Literally cannot express how devoid of life it feels. Everyone just goes home after work and locks themselves in their house.

Vancouver is much more beautiful and lively but you have to be a fucking billionaire just to afford a shitty little flat and there's hardly work there. It's also Asian and hipster central.

What about Banff though? That place looks gorgeous, and I love skiing. I had my fair share in the carpathian mountains north in Transylvania, but from the pictures I've gawked at on google, Banff is just paradise.

Not too far away from Calgary too.

I'll probably want to see as much of Canada as possible, anyway.

That's what I meant when I said very close to the Alberta side of the Rocky Mountains. Banff and Kananaskis are the Alberta side of the Rocky Mountains near to Calgary. Literally the most beautiful place on earth in my opinion. I'm a survivalist by hobby and have spent weeks at a time wandering around as deep as I can in them. Spend more than a few days there and you're likely to see a few bears walking about doing their thing.

If you mean living in Banff then that will be pretty difficult. It's sort of just a resort town staffed entirely by foreigners on work visas. If you'd like to live in that area I would recommend Canmore. A little town in the Rockies less than 20 minutes from Banff.

That's kind of a big dream of mine I haven't been able to achieve so far. I hope I'll get to experience it.

Hunting is legal, yes?

And no, I won't be living in Banff, I've got family in Calgary.

You're coming to the right place then. Water's so clean you can drink straight from the rivers without filtering it. Just pack up some food, a fishing rod, cooking supplies, and a tent and wander into the mountains for as long as you feel like.

Hunting is pretty huge here. We have lot's of deer and moose, and bear hunting is pretty common too although not as much. Very strict rules about it though. Despite the shit every one gives Alberta because of our oil fields, our government is actually incredibly strict when it comes to all things environmental.
