Fuck anyone on this board who is a climate change denier and fuck anyone on the planet who is a climate change denier.

As a wildlife biologist, fuck all of you. I have to watch hundreds of species go extinct or become threatened or endangered because of poor stewardship to the Earth by all of you ignorant keks. Animals and plants that build ecosystems that humans rely on for survival are being fucking ruined because "b-but mah coal and oil"

I mean are you guys fucking kidding me? The climate summit in Paris right now has over 175 attending countries. That's over 97% of the Earth's nations. You've all of course heard the statistics on the VAST majority of scientists agreeing that human-caused global climate change exists. How the fuck can you all be so fucking ignorant? The entire world is against you and you stick your fingers in your ears and start screaming.

You're worried about the world economy? Are you fucking serious? Besides there being little to know impact on the economy, do you know what's going to happen 10, 20, 50, and 100 years down the line? We're going to get fucking raped in our gaping assholes. Who was concerned about the economy when Rachel Carson published Silent Spring and there was a push to ban DDT? The corporations and politicians reliant on that industry. Who was concerned about the economy when the attorney general warned the American public about the negative effects of smoking cigarettes? The corporations and politicians reliant on that industry. Just because we can't dig up and burn as much coal and gas as we used to doesn't mean our fucking economy is going to collapse. New jobs will be created in more sustainable fields of energy.

Fuck you for wanting to ruin my future enjoyment of the planet and all that it provides. Fuck you for wanting to ruin my children's future enjoyment of the planet and all that it provides. Fuck you for wanting to ruin ANYONE'S future enjoyment of the planet and all that it provides. Seriously, fuck you.

You have issues with climate change or renewable energy sources? Ask questions about them.

Ex. Regular fucking dems will tout solar and hydro and wind as being perfect. They aren't. They aren't economical yet and they aren't efficient enough yet. But does anyone here actually doubt that the technology will improve? Think about the first guy to invent a gun. What if he got shot down because his invention wasn't as accurate or deadly as a bow and arrow or spear at the time?

>20 years ago scientists said that the ice caps would melt in 20 years
>today scientists say the ice caps will melt in 20 years (despite them actually growing)
>20 years from now they will say the ice caps will melt in 20 years

Climate change is a fucking joke. Yeah, it's real. It's part of the natural cycle of the Earth. Do humans have that big of an influence on it? Certainly not. We do to an extent but not enough to melt the fucking ice caps or something, not unless we were deliberately trying.

It is a fact that none of the global warming, oh wait what are we calling it now, climate change? Yes my bad. It is a fact that none of the climate change models have come true. Scientists cannot predict next week's weather, do not try to tell me they can predict weather 300 years from now.

And speaking as a scientist (physicist), I can say that a scientist will say whatever the fuck you want him to say if you are the one giving him grant money.

Also, let's imagine for a moment that human induced climate change is a real and serious threat. What difference does it make? Even if all of Europe and the US switched to 100% green energy, what fucking difference will that make? All of South America, Africa, and Asia would still be pouring out 99% of the toxic byproducts because it is not economical for them to switch to green energy.

Climate change advocates need to untwist their fucking panties and calm down because the world will not end in 40 years or whatever. And major breakthroughs in green energy are coming. The fact is that we do not have efficient enough green energy sources to supply our demands. Trust me, if solar panels were as efficient as coal or oil, all of the oil conglomerates would sell off their stock and switch to making solar panels instead. They're fragile as fuck and they know people will need to replace them, they will make money. desu if you think CEOs are James Bond villains plotting the destruction of the Earth you're an idiot senpai

The problem with liberals and conservatives on all sides is that not many people are educated on all the nuances of climate change, both man-made and in general.

Shit happens. A volcano might erupt and spill a bunch of aerosols into the atmosphere and cool the earth for a few years. Another volcano might erupt and pump a bunch of CO2 into the atmosphere and heat things up a little, but those time periods are measured in months or single digit years. Since industrialization, global temperatures have been steadily rising. That's the main problem.
>>
Bro is right, but he misses the point somewhat.

Soil scientist here.

Okay, here's the bad news. We are fucked. Irretrievably fucked. And its got nothing to do with climate change or whatever.Although that will make it slightly worse.

Our soils are exhausted. Apart from a few small places in the world where Humanity's foot print has been too small, or too recent, our soils have been depleted. They are like sponges now. We put on fertilizers, that's the only reason we can still grow things.

The general public has no idea what a fine line it is between petroleum prices and systemic agricultural collapse.

We are slowly approaching that line now. Okay, maybe not in ten years, or twenty even, but with about 95% certainty, within 100 years.

Okay, so you guys probably wont see it during your life times, although perhaps you will likely see it start to hit towards your old age.

The rural folk will still survive, but the city and town dwellers, they are going to die like rats.
>>

What people don't understand is that we have one planet like Earth to study and it's just this one. So yes, while in the past we believed and were informed that it's global warming that was dangerous to our Earth, we have to realise that predicting future climate conditions are EXTREMELY DIFFICULT.

We can't even predict weather with 100% certainty for a month in advance.

What we CAN and DO however is to study PREVIOUS climate changes (ice in Antarctica, isotopes are a wonderful thing). And our technology has improved immensely since the 1960's. Leaps and bounds ahead.

And even though our planet's workings are insanely complex and it might be possible to predict micro and macro changes in the planet's atmosphere and ecosystems, we CAN study predict, based on continuously revised models set upon previous climate changes, the future trends.

Moreover, it has always been climate change. Warming is just one effect. Global warming actually leads to increase in water vapour in the Earth's atmosphere and that causes extremes in weather. Carbon dioxide comes later although it also has its own effects.

Even though the Earth has had ice ages in the past and was due for another mini ice age, it was set back by our activities causing noxious gases and increased amounts of water vapour in the atmosphere. That cycle was ruined by our activities. Forests and oceans act as natural carbon sinks. But with massive deforestation and oceanic pollution they don't operate as well as before.

The problem remains with the general public. We look at one thing and think "that's the final thing alright" and when some new study comes along, or some flaw in the previous study is highlighted, we think "alright, they're just making it up, there's a conspiracy".
We're dumb.

No, no TL;DR.
>>
>>57230885

You're a short sighted faggot if you think species death is a problem.

We are on the edge of creating our own animals and engineering our own babies.

Nature is resilient. If you were right, which you are not, you would welcome climate change so as to destroy the human race.

But it won't happen. You can keep worrying. We have actual problems to deal with
>>
No fuck you im not reading all that shit. Especially with the opening "fuck you guys"

Humans are not the sole reason for climate change. White people do their part to limit their pollution. If you want to preach to someone, preach to china. They're the cause of the majority of our pollution

this.

I don't really know jack shit about ecology but I do know that most agricultural land on the planet has been irreversibly fucked. That's why the HUEHUEs down in Brazil constantly cut down rainforest. They don't know how to take care of the soil so they abuse the shit out of it for about 10 years and then it is depleted and they have to move on.

If it weren't for fertilizers, we would not be able to support anything NEAR the amount of food we're providing now. In 100 years time, we'll see a lot of Earth's population die off from lack of food. Hopefully only the non-white parts tho

>major breakthroughs in green energy are coming
agreed, they just need more time and money, which is investing in green energy is so important.

India's energy consumption is 1/12 of the United States' energy consumption. Much of Africa lives in poverty and cannot afford consistent electricity or vehicles. The big problem in climate change are first world countries. We have a very high standard of living and don't want to give any of it up at all. We don't want to turn off lights when we're not using them, we don't want to eat less meat, we want all kinds of fruit at all times during the year, we want to drive any car we want at all times without regard to actual needs, etc. There are things we can do on an individual basis to reduce our footprint and non of them are huge deals.

I turn off lights if I don't need them on. I take 5-10 minute showers. I bike or walk wherever I can. I don't eat a lot of beef or pork (animal agriculture releases a shit ton of methane into the atmosphere. Not saying go vegetarian at all though. I'm certainly not). The next car I buy is going to be a hybrid. I'm going to plant my own garden so I can live off my own land when I get a house.
People can do all or only a few of those things to help out. It's not a major over hall and destruction of our way of life.

The incalculable amount of variables which factor into climate are impossible for us to comprehend much less measure, disseminate and discern each influence with every other corresponding variable affected. It is closer to chaos than picking out a handful of environmental flags and stating such a blanket explanation as fact. Even the simplest of processes become near chaotic when examined in ever increasingly smaller scale much less planetary. Improvements in data collection with disregard to localized environmental and topographic variables (changed or underreported), coupled with the sheer amount of data collected for comparison antiquates previous data in scope and methodology. Experimenter bias can be attributed to much more than a salary, in the prestige of fronting humanity saving research in our dire final hour, receiving awards and accolades and earning a prominent place in the regulatory behemoth established to counter the contrived results before they show no fruition. Climatology resembles a religion, which explains the wildly unreasonable reaction to qualified dissension in peer review, refusal of data sharing and dismissal of the need for reproduction when errors and falsifications are present. That every climatologist concurs, what they were taught and are now teaching is fact, means nothing. And if it had remained in the scientific realm, it would still be called Meteorology. If man's influence on climate change was correctly represented as a hypothesis, it would not currently be the basis for the regulatory systems being devised, causing apoplectic opposition to the devastating economic ramifications and repression of civil liberties. Then research with the removal of politics being of foremost prominence in the exclusion of experimental bias would ensure the integrity of the studies and true consensus can be found.

Both sides fund the results they want. The big problem is that even if the west goes though massive changes to help prevent it it won't mean shit for the rest of the world. Climate change or no climate change, what really pains my an us is pollution. We're making the water and air fucking toxic and making natural places and animals disappear. It pisses me off to see piles of garbage on the side of the road and in streams I used to play in as a kid. It pisses me off to see pictures of trash islands floating in the ocean and landfills. It pisses me off that toxic chemicals in the environment and the spread of chytridiomycosis are going to make amphibians extinct. It pisses me off that little girls are having their periods at 8 because of all the hormones in the food. It pisses me off that the toxic pesticides I am exposed to because of Roundup resistant plants owned by Monsanto cause genetic and epigenetic changes in me and any offspring I have for 3 generations. Humans can't be fucking with chemicals and making waste like this. We're going to destroy ourselves and everything nice about this earth.

I'm not sure why anyone is arguing whether it is real or not, let's assume that one of the bad/worse cases is actually true (I'm talking about the serious journals not that hillarious nonsense Al-Gore/joe blow on the street says)

What is your solution?

Cutting emissions is a fucking joke as is going to solar/wind power as anything other than auxiliary resources until the tech gets way better but even more importantly battery technology gets way better and trust me battery tech is getting oodles of money as it is right now it's improving but not very fast and that NEEDS to be a lot better in order to work. The only reasonable solution in the meantime is for rich nations with the technology is to make nuclear the primary energy source of electricity, and let the younger nations use coal. This will have far far far more effect than any nonsense about moving towards solar/wind also it will lower energy costs thus increase quality of living. Over the next decade or 2 batteries will get good enough that electric cars(or maybe hydrogen cars will come back) will start becoming actually affordable to people that arn't rich. This will allow even more of the total energy to move towards nuclear.

Like the problem I have with global warming people isn't on if it's real or not or human caused or how bad. It's that their solutions arn't solutions they are terrible delaying strategies that result in way higher losses of quality of life and productivity.

Also the more extreme weather thing is total horse shit and lacks any data to back it up. *this is when you post that tornado graph, and I'll point out that the F3-5 counts are basically the same and F1-2 counts went way up because our ability to detect them went way up.)

>>
Reminder:

* A doubling of preindustrial CO2, absent any feedbacks, would result in a maximum forcing of +1.2C. Everyone agrees on this point because it's a simple computation given the physical characteristics of CO2 which is well mixed in the atmosphere.

* Actual warming, again absent feedbacks, would likely be much less due to bandwidth overlap between CO2 and H2O, something that we understand but find difficult to model (H2O levels vary dramatically day to day and even hour to hour with regional weather).

* The General Circulation Models, and the IPCC, predict 2-8C of warming because AGW theory assumes a positive H2O feedback. They assume that if CO2 causes a little warming, the atmosphere will hold more water vapor which will lead to a lot of warming until a new equilibrium point is reached.

* The warming predictions cover such a large range because everyone assumes a different average feedback rate. Again, modeling H2O in the atmosphere is extremely difficult because it varies so much with weather.

* Every GCM based on this assumption has failed to model temperatures for the past 15 years. They are all trending too high.

* In the late 1990's the modelers themselves stated that if they missed their predictions for more then a decade that would falsify AGW theory.

* There is no data to suggest a +H2O feedback either now or in Earth's past. Indeed, we cannot model some periods in Earth's history with an assumed +H2O feedback. It would appear that Earth's atmosphere is remarkably adept at dampening forcings from either direction, and does not amplify them.

* If there is no +H2O feedback then we literally have nothing to worry about.

* The average climate change believer knows none of this. Politicians, citizens, activists, surprisingly even a lot of scientists are literally ignorant of the theory and the math. In their mind it's simply "CO2 = bad" and "experts say we're warming faster then ever."

The more you know.

I'm 100% with you OP. I started reading about climate change about a year ago and haven't stopped since (used to not think about it at all/slightly deny anything was changing). We have locked in catastrophic climate change and I'm pretty sure it's not going to do anything but accelerate until our plants and livestock die of heat death. I'm of the opinion we have about 15 years of normal lives to live before everything truly gets mucked up. We should have a Manhattan Project level of investment of time and money in figuring out how to scrub carbon from the atmosphere but we aren't doing shit.

For all of you brainless anti-science keks in here, consider that we have added 40% more CO2 to the atmosphere. We completely altered the chemistry of an entire planet's atmosphere. Do you jagoffs realize how insane that is? We're completely fucked and I'm not even kidding. >Despite substantial uncertainties, especially for the period prior to 1600 for which data are scarce, the warmest period of the last 2,000 years prior to the 20th century very likely occurred between 950 and 1100. Proxy records show peak warmth occurred at different times for different regions, indicating that the Medieval Warm Period was not a time of globally uniform change. Temperatures in some regions matched or exceeded recent temperatures in these regions, but globally the Medieval Warm Period was cooler than recent global temperatures. Temperatures were probably between 0.1 °C and 0.2 °C below the 1961 to 1990 mean and significantly below the level shown by instrumental data after 1980.

>Ice caps are growing

Some are growing, but net change is negative (pic related). Increased precipitation and local tempeature decreases can explain this effect.

>It's part of the natural cycle of the Earth. Do humans have that big of an influence on it? Certainly not.

Earth's previous climate shifts were controlled* by CO2 levels. Humans have substaintially increased the volume of CO2 in the atmosphere and have had effects on the amount stored in the ocean as well. (I spent several years measuring this at UChicago, in coordination with Depaul and Loyola).**

Footnotes
*I recognize this word choice is poor, I am tired and could not come up with a more suitable one as this is slightly outside my field of study.
**Related to above, I did my UG in Mathematics and my Graduate in Financial Math. However, I had to do interdisciplinary work and there was an abundance of projects on CO2 measurement, so my knowledge is ancillary here from needing a basic background in order to assist in my portion of the projects.

Finally, the notion you raised that "scientists will say X because grant money" is obviously true sometimes. First hand experience, most of the research and work was done by people who were interested in the field and money was not a motication. A lot of this research is cheap-ish to do, our weather ballooing over the past two decades runs about ~4k-10k a semester budget for materials (basically nothing).

Fuck this planet. It's tried to do nothing but kill us since our inception. Scrape it clean to push technology to wild heights. Use it and understand it for what it really is: a stepping stone to an entire universe.

>>57234736
We know that the efficiencies of renewable resources can be improved, because they continually are. They are also more affordable with each passing year. Tesla now sells electric cars marketed for the middle class. If the problem is economical, than we need to invest more in R&D. The world has pulled together many times prior for the betterment of the human race (ex. eradication of polio, the U.N., Internet). There's nothing wrong with investing in our future, I know conservatives fear change, but change(adaptation) is why we are here.
>>
Ok here goes,

During 2007, Scientists playing around with nanotech, discover the optical antenna, which converts light into a electric current at a near 90% efficiency. Normal Solar panels are around 20% or so. Not only this but other physicists and electrical engineers know that thermal energy is just another frequency of the E-M spectrum and can apply the same principles to infra red energy. Plus the antennas for this range are slightly bigger for this and are therefore easier to produce. (Construction can be done in any Computer lithographic process of approx. 100nm or bigger - easily doable in today's computer chip market)

At a guestimate, a 1m x 1m wall of these antennas would convert local thermal energy during a 24hr period to be about 144mA. Due to the conservation of energy principle this power comes from lowering the local thermal environment.

There we go boys and girls. electricity production AND environmental temperature reduction. No-one knows about this because you fucking climate change scientists take all the grant money.

tl:dr, we can save the planet, if you can stop for a second with the dodgy data and climate models that don't work and redirect the money to a solution that has worked - An actual working physicist

>Even the simplest of processes become near chaotic when examined in ever increasingly smaller scale.

The magnitude and difficulty of calculations increases inversely proportional to the scale. In this context, it is very difficult to accurately predict how much rain will fall in a week from now from 3pm to 6pm in Chicago. It is comparably easy to predict how much rain will fall over the course of 2016-2017 in all of Illinois. We are generally accurate at the second, but not so with the first. There is a reason why, however I lack the vocabulary to explain it without math

>It is a fact that none of the global warming, oh wait what are we calling it now, climate change?
Despite the fact that 2015 is now the hottest year on record, I think the switch to "climate change" is because the term "global warming" confuses people who live in micro climates that cool due to the overall warming of earth.

As a physicist, you should know that even if we aren't able to accurately predict the climate 300 years from now, dramatically changing the chemical composition of our atmosphere probably isn't a good idea.
As a physicist, assuming you studied quantum theory, you should know the properties of greenhouse gasses.
As a physicist, you should know that the earth emits infrared radiation after being warmed by the sun.
As a physicist, you should know that greenhouse gasses absorb infrared radiation, containing more heat in our closed system (earth).

What school did you graduate from and what class?

You're ignoring the reports then. Crown of stars are devastating but the warming and acidification is what is causing the bleaching events. That's what kills reefs. Stony corals survive and thrive within an extremely narrow temperature and ph. Ah, yes, the old fallacy of attempting to discredit the information based on the provider and not the facts.

But hey, I'm certain that scientists funded by governments, wealthy industrialists, and businesspeople who are set to make billions from "climate change" and pushing so-called "green" technology are going to forever be utterly impartial, am I right?

You keep pointing out that the ocean is basic but I don't think you know what that means. Lowering the pH by introducing more hydronium ions in to the water is acidification, regardless of whether or not the final solution is acidic, the pH is still lowered.

Is not a fallacy.
Marc Morano doesn't know what a fucking equilibrium constant is, nor a hydronium atom, nor the absorption spectrum of CO2 and CH4. He gets his information from Alex Jones and other like minding individuals.
The overwhelming majority of scientist agree that greenhouse emissions should be reduced and they have plenty of paper that explain why.
I suggest you read some, rather than get your climate science information from ex political aides and wealthy people vested in the continued use of fossil fuels.

We could be using nuclear power to replace all the coal power plants and most of the natural gas power plants, in America. Though the liberals ruined that all back in the 80s with their unfounded fears and Not In My Back Yard attitudes.

You also have people like the Sierra Club. That would rather have us all freeze and starve in the dark. Than have us using carbon energy. I work in promoting alt fuel vehicles and EVs are a big part of this. Sierra Club nimrods are all against EVs because "muh coal" and ignore the huge efficiency of power plants and EVs. So they keep driving around in their 30 year old Volvos and Hondas.

If all beef was replaced with kangaroos which taste like beef, and don't produce methane gas and yeald more meat with less food and water than cows. Domestic farm animals being 30% the cause of climate change this switch would potentially cause change.

Or we could just eat less meat in general. as the farming of the feedstock is a major source of meat's pollution.

The West and countries emulating the West. They have an obsession with meat/dairy/fish/poultry with every meal. Which just is not sustainable. It isn't even how modern humans lived until after the industrial revolution. We ate mostly beans and grains.
>>

I'd be ok with that.
For now a beef tax would be helpful to slowly reduce the industry.
Most people don't know that methane (CH4) absorbs infrared 100x greater than CO2, and is therefore a more potent greenhouse gas.
>>
>>57241257
Emissions efficiency and cutting fossil fuel use isn't going to save us from our environmental comeuppance. The only real solution is somehow dropping the population back down to pre industrial levels and moving forward with zero population growth and green technology policies as a global imperative.

If we cut all Co2 emissions from vehicles and factories we'd be left with what he breathe.

That's about 63 thousand tonnes of Co2 a day (provided the average is 2 pounds of Co2 expelled a day by the individual) This means there's about 2 billion tonnes of this a year going out into he world.

Contrast this to the coal and cement industries of every country which is about 33.4 BILLION tonnes a year. If we killed that output completely we'd be okay. We wouldn't be clearly out of the firing line but it'd still be a vast improvement AND you don't have to live out your genocide fantasies.

>Assuming greenhouse gasses didn't absorb infrared light, and all the experiments proving otherwise were falsified (LOL),

A doubling of preindustrial CO2, absent any feedbacks, would result in a maximum forcing of +1.2C. This is basic physics verified by the experiments you mention.

AGW GCMs predict 2-8C of warming on the basis of a PRESUMED positive H2O feedback.

There's not any evidence of such a feedback.

If there's not a significant positive feedback to CO2...a feedback larger then the CO2 itself...any where in the climate system then it is pointless to worry about CO2.

>acidification of our oceans is arguably worse than climate change.

>There is so much to gain from switching to renewable energy sources

We cannot power the modern world with solar and wind. Period. Aside from the expense they are not base load supplies and cannot be relied upon 24/7.

Nuclear is the only alternative to fossil fuels, and it would take a century to transition the entire globe to nuclear power even if we went balls out.

On that point, even if all the disaster scenarios were true there's still NOTHING we can do because China, India, and the rest of the developing world is going to tell us to fuck off when we say stop using fossil fuels.

Yes they can. The sun is always shining somewhere, the wind is always blowing somewhere. With a co-ordinated network and enough reserves they can be relied alone forever. When a GHG emits absorbed energy, it isn't always emitted in the same direction that the energy was absorbed, therefore some of it is emitted back towards the troposphere.

That's great. Have you invented some kind of lossless magical electicity transfer method? No? Then how do you propose to safely and reliably transfer electricity in the megawatt range across oceans?

Not to mention that every single example you used has some kind of severe environmental effects in operation. Take tidal- it disrupts natural tidal cycles, affecting sea life, it changes erosion patterns and impedes shipping, as well as disrupting sea currents.

Anon, the person you responded to was correct. Your understanding of heat absorption and release in the atmosphere is rather simplistic, and is obviously based on high-school infographics.

The atmosphere is a dynamic system and loses heat not just via radiation, but also through convection. Most heat escapes to space during the nighttime. If you had ever lived in a desert area you would understand this.

Also, remember that accurate temperature records were only collected on a wide scale in the late 1800's, and systematic study only began in the second half of the 2oth century- right when clean air legislation started preventing soot and smoke from being released into our air. Soot and Smoke shield solar radiation, cooling the lower atmosphere.
