Its unfortunate for all freedom lovers that slavery was still a hot issue at this time because it really takes a back seat to the relevance of this war. Sure there was a large minority on each side fighting for slave freedom or right to keep slaves but the real war was fought by one side for their freedom from tyranny and by the other to keep the union whole. I dont believe the union soldiers acted knowing they were destroying the concept the republic but that was the outcome.
This fight was for state rights. States should have the autonomy to choose how to run their state. The federal govt's sole purpose should be foreign trade/protection/relations. As we know, the federal govt ends up becoming its own socialist monster because those in power fight to keep it (see all forms of government ever).

the sad part is that if they had waited to fight about 15 years later there wouldn't have been a civil war: machinery and factories would've basically wiped out slavery, AND the bad blood that persists between north and south would've been way more easily forgotten.

It was a war about two different economical concepts, money, state rights, how the Uniter States shall be led in the future and different ways of life. Both sides failed to negotiate, civil war it is.
Slavery was just a straw argument and a reason that could be presented as a noble cause.
In reality: this was one of the most pointless wars ever, there was no winner, just loser in form of thousand americans losing their life in a conflict that could've been prevented.
