All the breeds are fucked up to some extent, some less so than others.
Let's use the Rhodesian Ridgeback as an example. The dog was created by breeding the hounds Dutch settlers brought with them from Europe with the local dog breeds that were themselves a mix of domestic and wild dogs.
We ended up with an incredibly hardy, tough, HEALTHY breed thanks to responsible practices and wide genetic selection.
But lo and behold the pure-bred pedigree people in Europe and America got their hands on. Suddenly, the Ridgeback HAD to have its distinctive ridge or it wasn't the "real deal". by the 1970's, the breed was ruined in the States and they had to import dogs from South Africa because their emphasis on that ridge was causing fatal cysts and spinal nerve damage in the dogs that cost a bloody fortune to treat.
Now, the Ridgeback is making a healthy comeback again. But people still want that god damn ridge even it means your newborn puppy might be crippled by it.
Sure, you can go for that Belgian Malinois and that beautiful Leonberger, but it's ok if it's parentage included some mastiffs, bloodhounds and terriers. Forget about the blue-ribbon crowd, They've lost all touch of reality with what they're doing.
