Especially the chapter on death penalty and violence, but the whole novel is pretty brilliant if you're into military sci-fi that feels realistic.

i'd say a lot of it is a dismantling of your stereotypical middle class social conservative's view of "tradition" as bullshit, and that they should accept that their cushioned, bourgeois way of life was a fleeting transitory culture doomed to fail in the long run, that the collapse was inevitable and that the best way to deal with it is to just knuckle down and rest assured in your beliefs without feeling the need to have them collectively validated by a rotting civilisation...
i dunno.

Magic mountain by Mann was good but long and he recommends you read at least 7 times to get everything. Only managed twice.

Anyone here have a general opinion on Postman? I know he wrote about Huxley with Amusing Ourselves to Death, and this book looks like maybe it has something worthwhile in it.

He's pretty low on my reading queue though. I'll get to him eventually, if not for the worthiness of hearing another potential "update" of Brave New World Revisited, which I'm assuming is the tone of his works.

Amusing Ourselves to Death is an interesting read, and it's pretty short. It probably has a few insights into this election.
>>
>>56806664

Wrong assumptions. Start with The Disappearance of Childhood. Only then read Amusing, but don't expect Huxley.

Postman agrees with Huxley's idea that we would become "enslaved" through pleasure rather than pain, but that's about all he mentions of Huxley. The rest is his own superb analysis of the media (literally, as in medium) and their consequences. TV can never do what a book can, and this influences public discourse.

Consider this, when Lincoln was doing debate, in front of audiences, even before doing the official debates for presidency, people attended those debates largely for their personal political culture. Lincoln would be asked a question, and had 3 HOURS TO RESPOND in.

Then his opponent ALSO had 3 hours to make a rebutal. For one question. These guys knew their shit and knew how to argue.

Compare to today: question, you get 3 minutes to respond, and your opponent has a minute and a half to make a rebutal. Absolute joke.

Ever since Kennedy, virtually every US president has had to have good hair and not be fat.

>Kennedy
>Carter
>Reagan
>Clinton
>Bush jr.
>Obama

But yeah, read Childhood first. It's brilliant.

Nothing to let sink in unless you've read her. I haven't, so no opinion and nothing to sink in. If you have a point to make, make it, Benito.

One needs to read it to suggest as much. You don't help anyone who hasn't read her work, such as myself.

>I can't even describe the hate i feel towards that human scum

Feelings aren't arguments, Benito, so unless you want me to call you Monica from now on, give me a rational reason to make me dump Rand for good.

Jumping in on the McLuhan bit, check out this website for pdf links to the readings listed in this thread:

http://gen.lib.rus.ec/

Assuming you both are discussing Marshall McLuhan, check out both "Understanding Media: The Extension of Man" and "The Medium is the Massage: An Inventory of Effects" (and no, "Massage" is not a typo). Although leafposters have a bad rap on /pol/, McLuhan is definitely worth your while.

Frank Herbert Dune is top-tier, but avoid everything written by the homosexual Brian Herbert.

Is it really, though? I've often heard that it was poorly written. Is it anything more than a glorified version of the Lord of the Rings in space?
