Depends on what time you're talking about. Many people lived agrarian or small town lives back then so there wasn't much room for degeneracy. Combine that with the authority of royalty and traditional religion, accepting that there would be a corrupt count here or there, and you have a recipe for a societal standard or zeitgeist that combats degeneracy and while sweeping some of it under the rug. We have to be careful about trying to reminisce about a golden age that we never saw. The past was better than post ww2 in some ways, worse in others.
