Europe isn't devoid of natural life and I know of no significant animal being hunted into extinction in Europe or at least northern Europe. Europe has done great work keeping it's big predators alive despite increased urbanization and stuff. Sweden has the best milling industry in the world and we have large healthy forests (disregarding how shit the country is otherwise).

I can't speak for continental Europe but I know Poland has dense forests. As far as Britain is concerned they never had any great forests but rather big plains of fertile soil, which is the reason the vikings settled there for such a long time as well.
As far as the Nordic countries are concerned both Norway, Sweden and Finland largely consist of enormous forest areas. One statistic always mentioned in school that I remember is that Swedish forests are so wide and prosperous that they grow back faster than we mill it down. You can probably look this up.
