They can earn lots of money if they want to once they chose a good employer. The rest of the academics who have less commercial worth for society are left at (1) low paying jobs which have nothing to do with their studies, (2) work in academia.
This is how academia itself is creating an echochamber for soft sciences. They hire more and more people for positions within left agenda driven "sciences".
In this way they also create a heavy political influence just as much as trade unions for example can have heavy influence on politics. Academia is no different. (Corporations also have direct influence on politics, just like every other institution in the West).
