Why is healthcare so expensive?

Big pharma has to make a profit. They can't just give it away, that'd be Communism.

This applies to pretty much every commodity or service.

In the US? Because companies are trying to make a profit from it and will fuck you to, literally, death for a buck.

Everywhere else? Government incompetence, generally.

>Why is healthcare so expensive?

Because US hospitals charge insurance companies $20 for a bandage and insurance companies pay it.

Italians bring their cats to restaurants. That's so quirky I can't even.

i have a feeling some hospitals intentionally try to rack up costs and gouge you.

i had appendicitis. this is usually diagnosed with a simple ultrasound.

the guy in the ER kept trying to convince me to get a CT scan. he was like a car salesman.

i was very sick and naive, so i agreed. so i had a $8,000 scan and got bombarded with a huge dose of radiation. i don't even want to think about the significant cancer risk.

and it was all unnecessary.

only in some countries, like ours. I get the same treatment (if not better) and same prescription drugs in South Korea for a few bucks. Thankfully I go there like once a year, but the ticket is cheap when med costs are involved.

Please, please refrain from talking about things you don't understand.

Because it no longer consists of paying the smartest guy in the village to come over and predict when you're going to die.

On a cost-for-service basis, healthcare hasn't actually increased in price by much more than the inflation rate. It's just that much more is available now, and since nobody is willing to accept that they can't live forever, everybody thinks they're being forced to pay for expensive life-extending treatment.

We need to come to grips with the fact that we're not entitled to free immortality.
>>
I dunno, here i had appendix surgery for free. Tbh there's everything in healthcare free. But not so comfy - alot of people want it, so they're going into hospitals for any tiny reason, lol.

The entire automotive industry would like to differ
Only car dealerships are the most atrocities made by the industry

Big pharma is the reason why medicine is expensive as fuck
No ethics just for the cold cash
Shit research that they conduct
Plus doctors are forced to endorse these pieces of shit for money
Big pharma has no soul

And that's why the socialized shit doesn't work economically. The populace works for the lowest on the totem pole. Fuck that.

Australia has universal healthcare and it's STILL cheaper than America.

the vast majority of people pay taxes, so there's not a lot of people who don't have a stake in the system, just the poorest of the poor. i'm sorry that you're such an ingrate that you scoff at the very idea of helping out your fellow countrymen.
again, stay mad, burgerclap. ;-)

Because American's are fat and unhealthy. We got a fucking 70% overweight rate, and I believe a 25% obesity rate. It's fucking disgusting how we live.

How much is your life worth to you?

To them?
Nothing.

I'm the engineering manager in a metropolitan hospital. For a start, hospitals are fucking expensive assets to build, maintain and operate. They're also labour intensive, specialist, and process heavy.
>>
Because when the way you can sell something is "you literally need this to live" you can charge a lot for it.
>>
Because:

1. it's extremely privatized in the US compared to other systems in the first-world. As a result, there's no real drive for costs to come down, because that function of capitalism assumes that competition exists.

2. Under such systems, the costs of the uninsured and those unable to pay for emergency care get passed onto paying customers anyways. If you're not going to pay for it through taxes under a single-payer system, you're going to pay for it directly, and it's going to be a lot more expensive that way.

If the vast majority is 53%.... What a fucking retard.

That would be a function of free market economics which also assumes monopolies exist.

>wages don't rise with inflation for many years
>many americans now fall into income levels not taxed federally
>has to pay out in welfare services to keep some of them fed/supported

It's fairly ingenious, really. It's created a massive amount of wealth for certain ends of the economic spectrum. It's just unsustainable if followed to its logical conclusion.
>>
Don't assume that healthcare in America is challenged purely because it's privatised. In Australia we have a benchmark socialised healthcare system. The increasing cost of service provision is greater than inflation and there is an ongoing national discussion about the sustainability of the system.
>>
>>56778943
this desu senpai

to add onto it, competition isn't really the optimum way to enact healthcare, especially when you're talking about something like say, a vaccination program. Odds are low that having someone else attempt to compete on prices is really going to add anything to your attempt to getting anyone immunized for smallpox or whatever.

At the same time, removing competition from anything is stupid and against human nature, since it will simply result in said urge being expressed in a more destructive manner.
>>
>>56779672
So is it sustainable, or is it going to fail?
>>
>>56778554
Wasn't it shown that fat people cost less in healthcare costs overall because they die several years earlier?

I remember this back when people were discussing a fat tax...
>>
>>56779754
It'll keep going but government is forced to rethink the model. We're facing a potential tax increase currently to pay for health and education. Interestingly over recent years government has been focused on forming partnerships with private sector to reduce costs and improve efficiency in health service delivery. I'm directly involved in outsourcing health services through my job.
