I started volunteering at an animal shelter after work to give back and use up some free hours I had. Very few men there, of course, but the work is still rewarding. Every time I come in, it's spending time with mistreated animals, walking dogs, cleaning and fixing kennels, handiwork, etc. Feel good stuff and I'm always busy.
But I noticed today that while me and the one other dude on my shift spend most of our time fixing stuff, scrubbing stalls and wrestling pitbulls, the women sit around and just pet the animals, call them cute names, and gossip. There's no real concern for treating the animals LIKE animals.
Case in point why this is retarded: today one of the pitbulls lost its shit while I was bringing it back to its pen. It started foaming and trying to attack one of the other dogs, full open jaw and everything. Being a guy who's not an idiot and doesn't let his guard down around animals, I was prepared for this and immediately yanked the choke collar, safely restrained the dog and slowly walked it to a safe distance while my buddy dealt with distracting the other dog.
This same exact scenario played out with one of the women. Her friends were chatting and feeding treats to their favorite dog, fluffing its blankets and the like, while the other was walking back this one real aggressive pitbull mix. The walker suddenly starts screeching that something is wrong and we look to find the pitbull locked onto her wrist and not letting go. We had to shove a stick up its ass to get it to open its jaws it was clamped so tight. And when we asked what happened, all she could say was that she kept feeding it treats on their walk and when she ran out it started sniffing her pockets. One thing led to another, she tried to distract it by petting it and offering a toy. All while she was putting it back in the pen with another dog still out of its pen. Her dog saw all this and flew off the handle, biting her.
