I think this is a good attitude, but I'm not sure how easy it is to to in practice.
I think in situations like this, it's generally the policy to answer lethal force with lethal force. (anyone in law enforcement feel free to correct me on this)
And in this situation, he's threatening cops with a knife, which is considered a lethal weapon. He's not on top of the cops or anything, but it doesn't look like he's more than 3-5 meters away from the nearest cop.

Depends. When I was in Iraq we got in a firefight once with about 6 guys. We found out after these guys were injecting themselves with some kind of drugs. (most likely adrenaline something) Anyways, we would hit these guys and be sure we hit them yet they would not drop. Find out later some of these guys were hit upwards of 8 times and only died from blood loss later.
