Stalin was utterly conservative and strayed completely away from the original marxist plan. He was Christian, authoritarian and wanted to preserve Russian culture and aristocracy. He was a far-right communist.

before he was a marxist he was a star pupil in the seminary school and even got a govt. scholarship for tuition.
He sang in the choir where he was considered to have the best voice and his schoolmates said he was very pious and scolded them when they were not observing religious rules
there are actually a ton of surviving documents from stalin's early life like personal letters, school records, even some of his homework assignments and poems
also Stalin's granddaughter in a BBC documentary interview said Stalin was totally depressed and despondant after Hitler's invasion and gave confession 4 times
the church in USSR went through many phases. when Kruschev came to power he cracked down on the church again because it was considered to be subverting socialist values, but later there was a kind of truce with the church
also it was heavily infiltrated by the KGB who had their agents in like 90% of the top positions and throughout the entire clergy. It's worth noting that the orthodox church (and many other Russian institutions) is still infested with former KGB agents because Russia did not purge their security service and make public the archives like East Germany and some other countries did after the fall of communism
