I don't understand the pledge of allegiance in schools. I may be some teenager who is just being curious or edgy but I just can't understand why we do this every single day. I one day just found myself looking around at everyone that was doing it, the words trailed off as everyone finished.
For a a few years now, every time we have to say it I only stand, I do not speak the words nor do I place my hand on my heart, I just cannot see why we have to pledge allegiance to a country while covering out heart to the flag every single day, I didn't grow up here why should I pour out patriotism every single day to a country I do not have respect for?

So /pol/, tell me, am I just an edgy disrespectful dirt bag teenager or does any else see my point?

You are what's wrong with this country. Get out.
>>
>>56760775
When I was a edgy atheist, I would say the pledge loud enough for people to hear when I didn't say "under God". When people asked why, I would say because it wasn't included into the original version and I don't want to appease the fanatical Knights of Columbus. Nobody would know what I was talking about which gave me a degenerate feeling of false righteousness.

Since I will never have to say it again, I will probably not even bother saying any word of it at all. This nation doesn't deserve respect.

It's pretty edgy tbqh, but you don't sound like a dirt bag.

The pledge is a tradition, like any you might find in any religion, or during sporting events etc. It's kind of a conservative thing, having traditions that is, which I think is why some people like yourself become curious about them at some point.

Basically, we do the same thing repeatedly, in this case vocally, at certain times to remember and/or revere something. In this case, the country we live in and what we're all supposed to be about. I'm going to take a wild guess and assume you didn't go to any kind of church growing up?
>>
True story. I used to say the pledge of allegiance at my preschool everyday.

My first day of kindergarten I complained to my dad that it was no good.

It turned out my only excuse was that we didn't say the pledge of allegiance in the morning.

I just didn't want to go to a new school is that so hard for a 5 year old to understand.
>>
>>56760775
Every teenager sees your point, because it's a position to have as an edgy teenager. This country supports you and is your home. The least you could do is show it some respect. But that's beyond the capabilities of your average fedora wearing edgelord.
>>
>>56761815
Then get the fuck out, seriously. If you don't appreciate it, leave. It's easier than ever. Go to whatever European shit hole you please.
>>
>>56761974
Not really, my mother is very Christian. I see your point and stand and place my hand over the national anthem and all that.
>>
>>56760775
Nationalism at its finest.
Look who got it removed though
>godless kikes
Why?
Because leftist ideology can't thrive in a nationalist society.
Why would anyone want leftist ideology to thrive?
Well if you're trying to destroy the nation and establish your own rule over it. You can do it without firing bullets or wars by indoctrinating an entire generation.
But of course you won't believe any of this because you been indoctrinated yourself.

Give me your best argument for the specific rehearsal of this pledge every day without resorting to an emotional appeal to self righteous patriotism.

It is fucking cultish and non practical. Nobody gains patriotism or respect for something when they are forced admire it for it's own sake.
>>
33 “Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not break your oath, but fulfill to the Lord the vows you have made.’ 34 But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all: either by heaven, for it is God’s throne; 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. 36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. 37 All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.

youre simply seeing a continuous indoctrination process which bins you to a set of nationalistic idealogies which can be exploited for profit y the powers that be once you are released into the system.

heres the kicker...the country you mindlesslty pledge allegiance to day after day doesn't give a fuck about you. And neither o the teachers that try to push you to do it, you are just a source of revenue and another young mind being conditioned to servitude to them.
>>
>>56762321

>>56763030
Not really a sports fan. >>56762602

Example:

>>56761793

This person is trying to persuade OP that he should feel bad that he does not admire this country enough to repeat the pledge. He implies that he should say the pledge because it is a homage to the people that built this country which he believes are deserving of unquestionable praise.

Basically empty non-convincing words.

It is cultish because it is a practice that demands 100% conformity given by the fact that some students get in trouble for not saying it.

I want a logical argument for the pledge being an objective benefit when forced repetition makes it lose all value and necessity.

>didn't grow up here

>>
>>56763030
>it is impossible to be thankful for and proud of this country without repeating a pledge to it every school day

Interestingly enough, I would bet everything I own that if adults were forced to make this pledge everyday before work or college class then people like you would be on the opposite side and oppose its triviality.
>>

>>
>>56763426
Yeah, well I'm gonna go ahead and assume that you live in a pretty crazy (normal) area. I was convinced in highschool that anarchosynicalism was the way to go. My mother was horrified, and teachers were equally disgusted. And I live in Cali. But my mom, being smart as fuck, knew it was a phase and mostly left me alone so I could work it out on my own.

I would encourage you to read up on all you can, so you can gain a broad perspective on the world and our country. Just don't forget that you live here, and are protected and supported by it. The pledge is obviously not compulsory, just so you know, but it doesn't hurt to show some respect now and then. Like taking your cap off during the anthem.

Unfortunately the pledge has no effect on an emotionally crippled nation. I would value it if this country had a common goal and a sense of personally responsibility to improving our lives.

But now? Now they are meaningless words of a nation in denial that its greatness has been outsourced.

I think you are too harsh on the general pubic.

In order for a person to be happy, they have to do things that fulfill their personal values. They have to achieve and do something of that improves each other's life. Tough luck though, the manufacturing job market has been shipped over seas leaving Americans to fight over minimum and low paying jobs. These jobs provide minimal fulfillment and thus the nation gradually gets more depressed because they view their lives as non important.

Then you have corporate snake oil sale men selling life fulling value in a can, replacing your desire to DO something with a desire to BUY something. This kills the spirit.

So you have a country where the majority of people make less than $30,000 a year and have to work harder to survive which distracts them from being able to see (and for that matter do anything to stop) corporations buying their way into our lawless legislature to further put things in their favor.

You think people are too lazy to fix things? How about being too poor, overworked, and emotionally crippled.

Assuming you grow up all by yourself, with no context and guidance given by your parents/family/mentors, yes.

Something we take for granted is our upbringing, which hopefully included some insight like "but do what's right", "the gov't can and does get it wrong, but that's why we're here, and the gov't's faults reflect probable faults in ourselves"

I know, it's easy to become jaded with all the shit that takes place here, but what I'm saying is that there's no magic cure to what ails us. The only thing that will fix this country is guts and drive, to promote solidarity as a nation.

You have to respect the place that we all live in (whether we had a choice or not), and take part in our society by voting and whatnot. Sitting back and being sad about it does nothing. Bonus points for starting a rally or something. I would personally speak if asked to, I have nothing but admiration for the dream of a country the founding fathers wanted.

And I don't think the pledge will give people any guts or drive. Most people lack the ability to be self driven, they need to be told what to do or how to live. But if I could have a platform to speak at a rally, I would promoting what you said: vote.

For fucks sake, we have local elections where corrupt incumbents run unopposed. If voting became mainstream, this nation could change entirely in a decade. We the people literally have the power to topple the house of cards D.C. stands on if we had confidence in our ability to vote. Unfortunately we are to distracted by our daily lives to realize this and neither major party is going to give the secret away.

You don't get it, do you? Those failed states "have a unified foundation of morals they uphold" i.e. they're collectivist, whereas Ayn Rand embodied the "imma do wat aimma do" standard that you attributed to leftism. You operate on a false dichotomy in which right is a synonym for good and left a synonym for bad, when politics is much more complicated than that. Mussolini and Hitler stood against both leftist communism and rightist capitalism, against which they advocated a third way which upholds the nation. Nationalism is separate from the left and the right, and so is individualism.

And I couldn't be happier about Erdogan getting his kike ass kicked by Putin. Pic related.

True patriotism is understanding the core values of your nation and doing what you can to preserve them. Pledging your allegiance to authority is the most anti-American thing you can do.

People who say the pledge of allegiance usually just seek the validation of others.

>nationalism is not the law, BTW

True, but when the OP's position becomes common place and you no longer have pride in your nation (notice, I didn't say government), then the nation becomes weak. I look at Europe and how the repressed their nationalism to the point to where even the flag is frowned upon. What happens? You have people submitting to whatever that government wants even if it means destroying that nation. I look at Germany and Sweden and I do not want that.

So yes, people need to mock and be harsh on people like OP. Are identity as Americans is not from some common culture heritage that spans thousands of years, but rather people deciding that they are Americans and not whatever they came from.

So you're a sane liberal. I don't mind. That's someone I can have a discussion with.

I don't know where you live or what they play on TV there, but in my area no "leftist" says they love their nation. They hate it, because nationalism counters individualism. And all mainstream liberals campaign on individualism. Social issues. Which are important, but are not the whole picture. Sadly, most voters who are democrat vote for them based on their beliefs on social issues (abortion, gay rights, etc), and swallow the rest of their ideas wholeheartedly. I'm not saying right wingers don't, but the left seems to be the most in favor of "free stuff for me".

In my honest opinion, those that say "I love this nation, the best way to take care of them is free shit from the government, donated by the people" are young. Very young, like, haven't had their first real paycheck, complete with taxes young. Complete leftist nationalism seems like my idealistic self in high school. We thought everything was so simple.

I don't necessarily agree with >>56771003; it's just an example of leftism and nationalism coexisting.

I'll agree that they rarely do in modern America, though.

That's fair enough. So what the actual fuck do we do about the c.ucks from both sides that just can't understand? Very polarized country. I must admit, one of the reasons I like Trump is that he seems to really be more about the economic issues of the country. The whole wall thing, while important, is more of a meme. Trade deals and job creation/retention seem much more important.

Holy fuck, myself among many others, stopped a hockey game once, and I live in the US. far from a Northern latitude. I saw footage on the local news where the players from both teams were watching us. The fight we were involved in was big enough to stop the players so that we could watch us. I came to find out the next day that we had started the fight. I didn't know about the dip cup thrown on the frat boys with a one of our guys, having thrown said cup, standing up saying "WHATEVER THE FUCK IT WAS, I DID IT." Oh, fuck, they were just as drunk as we were, but we had the high ground.

The start of wars aren't much different. The end result is. Everybody at the end of that fight was laughing.

I like Trump too. Wrote an article for my school newspaper supporting him.

We need a revival of a passion and understanding of the basic values of liberty and freedom. People need to read and understand the Enlightenment philosophies that were appropriated into the founding documents of the United States. They need to understand what truly sets America apart from the rest of the world. Shit like:
>freedom of expression
>freedom of religion
>freedom to peacefully assemble
>freedom to own firearms
>protection from unreasonable search and seizure
>personal autonomy and responsibility
>a government that (ideally) serves the people, not the other way around
>guaranteed trial by jury of peers

People on the Right too often get enamored by the symbolism and think that's sufficient.

People on the Left, well, don't get me started.

That said, fuck refugees. Islam is a cancer.

You're bro-tier just so you know.

I think
>personal autonomy and responsibility
trumps them all though. For example, what is the right to peacefully assemble if some use it to chimp out for no reason (Chicago last night)? That shit blows my mind. We are so retarded sometimes.

And yes, the right does get caught up in the symbolism. And the left obviously has disdain for it. I call for /moderate/-ish. We need more public figures who don't really have a dog in this fight to participate. Sadly, that's hard to come by right now.

But, the fact that a neurosurgeon and a businessman are having semi-successful campaigns for president is highly motivating for me. I grew up believing that anyone can be president, not just senators and congressmen who are already bought and sold by their party.

I have hope, America will honestly probably always be GOAT, despite being slightly autistic

>not pledging allegiance to your country
Don't like it, get the fuck out
You honor our land with your promise of blood or you don't get to stay here.
Though admittedly I have hated this country ever since Jefferson was president and the years during the Civil War I actually liked Dixie despite its spitting on the Constitution.
But this is still you homeland and you do best to respect it before it decides to disrespect you in kind

>haven't liked this country since Jefferson was president

Since Jefferson was president? News flash, nigger - he was the 3rd president out 40-some odd. We've been around a full 110 years give or take since he was president. If you don't like it, you and yours could've easily gotten the fuck out a LONG ass time ago.
>>

Normally I just lurk.
I don't often post my thoughts on anything here.

For starters, to declare your allegiance in itself is a good thing, especially your country. This country in and of itself isn't as jaded at most on /pol/ would have you believe. (I do agree somethings are about as fucked up as one can make them in this day an age)

To say that it is your right to not pledge allegiance to an administration is not just a right but is a requirement.
Yes you have the right to object to the current state of affairs doesn't preclude you from the obligation to affirm your allegiance to object from those requirements.
You're pledging your alliance to the republic, because of what it exists for, not who is leading it. Just because you don't like who's in office doesn't mean you abandon what the actual government stands for, contrary to what most of the media would have you believe.

If its the 'Under God' part you have an objection to, then look for stuff during the 3rd great awakening. "In God We Trust" didn't show up until then either. Essentially all of that was a bastardization of that moment with the cold war steeping in the background.

IF you argue about liberty and justice for all, then well seppuku yourself and hari kari your way into oblivion

When you lose your passport in a foreign country or if there is ever a war in our homeland you dumb asses will finally realize how important it is to have this shit memorized. For example:

>get captured in a war
>have to prove american without documentation
>get asked to repeat the pledge
>can't
>get shot and die because foreign invader

those people didn't vote until the mid 60s

it's easy to test
if you know a rightwinger, ask for policy details of why they're are voting for cruz or whoever. they probably won't know much unless their church/close friends told them.
