>November 25, 2015 – President Obama signed the U.S. Commercial Space Launch Competitiveness Act (H.R. 2262) into law.
>This law recognizes the right of U.S. citizens to own asteroid resources they obtain and encourages the commercial exploration and utilization of resources from asteroids.

http://www.planetaryresources.com/2015/11/president-obama-signs-bill-recognizing-asteroid-resource-property-rights-into-law/

This is one of the most important bills ever passed that has to do with space exploration. THOUGHTS?

How nice of Obama to let Elon Musk keep his own property. This is just a precursor to taxing whatever endeavor they first launch to try and gather wealth in such a way.
>>
>>56757544
Cool, too bad it costs unmanageable amounts of money to get into space so the only people that will be able to control these asteroid resources will be the elite, which already control all the resources on Earth anyway.

So nothing changes.

We're building a space station in the hollowed out asteroid right?

How is an asteroid yours? This gives you a legal framework upon which to make a claim of ownership. Before now, you could claim ownership but it would have no legal recognition, meaning you'd have no legal recourse is some stole 'your' asteroid.

With the type of shit we get away with, I could see this happening.

There's so many things we began that we aren't good at anymore, and space exploration will be one of them. People will look at the failure that is NASA one day and wonder what the hell we were thinking.
>>
>>56759033

smashing them into mars?
>>
>>56759311
Now that sounds like a good idea

Over the years Mars will build mass to a size allowing a stable atmosphere
>>
>>56758846

Once spacex or another company manages to build a rocket that's fully or near-fully reusable, launch costs will plummet massively.

If this technological hurdle is passed, space travel will be only a few times more expensive per kilogram than air travel. At that point, the cost of sending mining equipment into space will be easily justified by the potential profits.

you dont really need much to mine asteroids.

most of it will get sent down towards earth any ways so all you need is a make shift shield to protect any heat sensitive ores.

IE fuel for starting a world/interstellar war over some shitty asteroids

For fucks sake America get your shit together. We can't even resolve disputes over rocks on Earth.. imagine the shit storm over rocks in space.

Bubble cities on asteroids with their own system of governance and microeconomy. The solar system will be filled with millions of micro city states. Terraforming is a silly dream when it is much easier to throw a tent over an asteroid.

It just means the US will recognize claims made on asteroids. Doesn't mean other nations have to recognize such ownership. It gives anyone whose ownership of asteroids is challenged a legal venue in US courts.

Might makes right. The United States is one of maybe three powers on Earth that can kill you in space if you fuck with them. Of course if you're able to lob an asteroid down the Earth's gravity well first, you might win though have no planet to go back to. That mining colony better be really cozy.

>Terraforming is a silly dream when it is much easier to throw a tent over an asteroid.

As long as it can protect from debris.

Building underneath the surface or living in caves helps as well. I'd love to see us colonize the solar system.

The moon would be a great start.
>>
How long before Houston tell us the problem is that an asteroid we were drilling on has moved into tragectory on earth? Rather mine from the scraps of the universe than take from a planet, especially the one we live on. And what are the chances this space rock or rocks we start stealing don't mean something to someone. What if someone harnessed the energy out of orion belt and from Earth it disappeared one day, what would that mean to us and could we do this by stealing asteroids?
>>
>>56757544
>K guys if you take it it's yours it's not like it's preposterous to suggest that if you want to mine asteroids one day you can't have it so we're letting you know you can

Most important bill ever you say?

But really this kind of thing has been running around the govnt for 10 years now at least, there's probably plenty of unpleasantness in the bill.
>>
>>56762454
They don't, but it clears up ownership issues, etc., that might have arisen when they try to monetize whatever they mine back here on Earth.

The Earth isn't "the world". It's the planet you live on. There's no reason why we shouldn't explore the very world we live in.

Investors aren't going to put their money into something that has no legal system behind it. The law grants access to the US court system for those who make claims on asteroids. It's not granting permission, it's granting protection.

But wait miner goy. You can mine my asteroid if you pay me 6 gorillion shekels in economic rents.

We need a lot more solar power collecting and some microwave energy receivers in place to power an elevator bruh. May as well use some spare silica and titanium oxide on the moon to build a giant concave lens solar blast furnace for lulz, process that shirt for transport to earf or space structures under construction. Lots of shit to do before an elevator.

You could still sue a country in international court for fucking with your asteroid.

Just like cigarette companies sue countries for infringing on their "right" to have cigarettes without warnings.
