It's actually very easy to get a green card depending on what education/profession you have. If you're an essentially unskilled worker and not a Mexican it's apparently very difficult.
If you have what's equivalent to a graduate level degree in science/medical related fields and can find employment getting a green card is really easy and actually not as much red tape as you might think.
I went to graduate school in the US coming from Bulgaria. After I graduated I got a job and the University I attended and had a green card in about a month. I'd guess ~75% of the people I was in gradschool with ended up with permanent residence as well.
Going back to school is probably the easiest way to go (besides being Mexican). There are many foreign students and between hooking and between getting married or being qualified it is not hard to get a green card.
