Gamer gate has a bad rep because it was a war between simple gamers and journalists and of course journalists have the ears of millions in their hands while gamers barely have a voice so journalists are able to spin the narrative to whatever they want almost unopposed.
Now seeing how Zoe Quinn is getting a movie of her side of the story and the main stream media seems to be completely against people finding out the side of the story of gamergaters is because gamergate stumbled upon something that might potentially affect them too... that famous email mailing list.
you don't have to be very smart to realize that the same way these small time video game journalists have a secret mailing list, there also must be a secret mailing list composed of the highest ranking and most influential main stream professional journalist who also collude and conspire to spin the narrative of stories the way they want them to be a spinned and the last thing they need is some baseman dwelling gamer melding with their business and shining light on journalistic ethics and integrity.
Gamergate almost uncovered a major conspiracy and the journos made sure everybody think it was just some women hating man children throwing a fit because they jealous of their vidya.

Zoey Quinn, Anita Sarkeesian, etc, are all essentially media whores. They know what will push buttons, similar to how a whore knows how to arouse a man, and so they do exactly what they need to do, completely uncaring about the act itself or what it says about them for engaging in it.
In this case, the trigger was to insult video games and attempt some kind of fake movement to change them into social justice garbage that can't offend anyone. Neither one of these girls plays video games, so they could just as easily have targeted another market such as porn or prostitution, or basically any area where women are exploited.
But you can't do that very well by sitting on your ass on the internet writing a bunch of diatribe.
Video games was the perfect candidate. And it worked. The backlash fueled it, it helped create supporters of these whores as well, all on this perpetual feedback machine that could only propel these whores upwards into being more valuable commodities. Basically they're now classy escorts instead of street whores. But their job remains the same.
None of the websites involved originally were real journalists to begin with, so that part barely even mattered. Everybody accepted that pretty quickly. But "social justice?" Fuck no.
