Try to convince them that immigration will never work as a solution to global poverty. The home countries stay poor, poverty breeds higher birth rates, and so every immigrant "escaping" from the Third World will be replaced by two or three others who also want to "escape."
And as for why immigration itself is bad, remind them that the "refugees" are overwhelmingly male, military-aged, and not actually from Syria. That may take a bit more murder and rape before it really sets in though.
