So, in today's age and potentially years before, what option does an 18-19 year old have other than to go to university or work a dead end retail job?

I feel as if millions of young people are coaches into university without knowing the debt, and potential lack of prospects after they graduate.

Thoughts?

I'm currently doing a history degree and I know I've fucked up. No idea what to do, I'm only in my first term and i already know I'm fucked but the debt is mounting and what else would I do anyway?
>>
Leave.

Go to school offering a skilled trade as well as associates degrees.

Graduate.

Then get a job in your skilled trade, pay off the debt. Figure out what you want to do.

Then go back with company benefits and reimbursements and debt free.
>>
Skilled trades. Minimal schooling required. Start making money before your friends even start paying their loans. Very easy to be self employed.
>>
>>56702899

I don't know how it's done in the USA, but over here in Aus, you need to find someone willing to take you as an apprentice, it's not as easy as it seems.
>>
I don't get this trade meme.
My neighbor is an electrician with the union who has been out of work for 3 years.
I'm in IL
>>
Interesting.

I have thought about going into a trade, it's just picking which one and finding s company to take you on.

I feel as if I'm wasting both the tax payers money and my time, it feels terrible to be honest.

Just thought I'd ask what thee options there are for those who don't go to uni, or who drop out.

On the issue of being self employed, in what field and how long would it take to make an acceptable amount to live on? (Just a general question)

Pick up a spray gun and start buying shitty panels from scrapyards. Start painting them in your spair time. Open up a spray & body shop when you have the skills

Relatively easy to get an apprenticeship. Got to start at the bottom and bust your ass for 4 years but hard work has its rewards. Once you've finished you can make good money.

When you start working for yourself you realise how short changed you were getting on the 9-5

I was 18 when I started washing cars at the dealer that I'm at making $8 dollars an hour. I showed up on time, did as I'm told and did not complain. After 4 years the owner realized that I do what it take to get things done so he moved me up to parts driver. I was a parts driver for 2 years than they moved up to parts counter. 6 years later (last year) after the manager retired they moved me up to parts manager. I make decent money. I get commission off of gross profit and customer survey scores with bonus tiers on gross numbers and a base salary. I worked for what I have I didn't ask for a single thing. 18-19 years olds need to understand that hard work pays off in the end and not right now. I've hired 2 of them in the last year for drivers they are lazy one of them told they were going to take my job to the owner. Younger milenials are to attached to thier phones instead of work.

Stop beign idiot and learn a real job instead of going to university.

I left school at 16, went to a technical college for a year and was taken on as an apprentice plater (boilermaker for those outside UK). Three of my friends went to university and now work in dead end jobs with a degree that has absolutely no practical use in the real world.

Does the UK work like the US? Dude come study to Portugal or something, it's like 1000 euros per year and you can rent your own place next to the uni for like 50 euros/month if you share with another m8

I finished only highschool and I am 28 and have my company with my wife.
I am from Croatia so the best thing what I did was to check what industry here was growing and where I could see a stable future and that was tourism for me.

I am running a marketing company for tourism.
Took a couple of years of getting the knowledge and people in the industry. We are doing very very good now but still I would recommend you to get a nice degree in something useful so you have a PLAN B if your company fails.

literally nothing, some people are making extra with money cause many of them stay in some hotels or hostels to take rest and take a shower.

But in short no nothing did change, its just some people gained money like hostels or hotels.

University is pointless unless you want a PHD in something medical related.
You're better off just getting some work experience.

Truck driving is good money. I made just over $150k (about 3,200 a week) last year doing a dedicated run between my companies shipping hub in Laredo Texas and the Canadian boarder.

Have you met your wife's new partner yet?
>>
>>56703386
This is total horseshit, I worked in retail from 18 to 24 and got moved up once to supervisor only because everyone else was too mong to do it

I never made decent money in that job. This is the kinds of jobs most people are going to get, trained or not, because there are too many fucking people in our countries

Then I went back to university, studied graphic design, worked my ass off, got some actual gainful employment where my wages have continued to increase. And will increase hugely when I have the contacts to go it alone

Pest control.

As long as you work for a private company or at least not Orkin or Terminex you will make bank.

I kill stuff for a living which is shitty, but the job can be pretty fun and rewarding outside of that . You get licensed as an apprentice and work your way up to certified applicator and then you can start your own company if you can swing the insurance. Same system as plumbing electrician etc.

Electrician out of work?

something is wrong mate. Even the most loser, drug addicted electricians I know are out of work for 2 weeks at a time, tops.

I'm in welding, all the males in my family are tradeamen across the country and parts of Canada, I follow the forums and some of the publications, I've spoken to guys I know in various fields from various locations, and I brushed up on the BLS info.

The trades aren't glamorous .
The trades aren't monolithic.
The trades do have a lower median income than some careers expected after a college degree.

That being said depending on the work and amount of experience you have, it can be a stable and fulfilling source of income, and if you decide for purchase a house you will automatically decrease the amount you will pay for contractors by an order of magnitude.
>>
>>56707359
NPR had an article last week where apparently the US is having a large decline (like 5-10% decrease annually) in the amount of electrical/phone line repairmen. the guys who go out during/after a storm to fix power lines 'n' shit.

very very few people are taking up the work these days, and all the old fucks are retiring without training new people. supposedly after a year of work, you can command 25-40/hr depending on area.

obviously not a "fun" job and little more dangerous than others, but seems like job security if youre good
>>
>>56707418
>The trades aren't glamorous .
i think this is the main reason i didnt pick up a trade. my job right now is rarely monotonous, so it keeps me sane. hopefully will keep me sane for the next 40 years.

i just dont feel like welding the same goddamn boat for two years
>>

Depends on the state but here in New Hampshire you have to finish trade school and 4 years of apprenticeship to get your license. You can do them both at the same time. Once you have your license you're eligible to take the masters exam, though most wait a year or two.

go into a trade...carpenter, electrician, welder, masonry, etc etc

though you have to love that shit because its hard work. i went to college, now i make 6 figures working for a software company and basically shitpost on /pol/ all day.

It might be a bit different for you, since you are in the UK, but I started out here

https://labor.ny.gov/apprenticeship/general/occupations.shtm

Then I looked at the individual labor unions sites (even though I'm not a big supporter of unions, some do provide training, protection, and plug you in for work-with-benefits.)

For example I checked out the local plumber's union (which my father was in)

http://www.ualocal1.org/training_apprentices.aspx?zone=Training%20Center&pID=1355

And various other ones with apprenticeships.

I looked at the Bureau of Labor Statistics (you probably have something in the UK) to get a general- not exact- idea of pay and availability

http://www.bls.gov/ooh/

http://www.bls.gov/bls/blswage.htm

Info from sites like these I think are derivative of the BLS

http://www.careeroptionsmagazine.com/employment/career-opportunities/

Then once I got my apprenticeship, my father got me a sub to Practical Welding (which ran out by now) and there are some others like from the AWS. Some pieces just really hammered home safety, and it one of the pieces really helped me in a bind for what administrative procedure to follow when I saw hotwork being done without LOTO, but I didn't want to get shitcanned.

As for forums, start with Contractortalk, DegreeInfo and Indeed, but now I'm on WeldingWeb
(It's mostly going to be old farts complaining about shit, though).

University isnt the only way to get an education. You just pay a ton to make it easier and if you pass you get in the special club that says you have a degree. The lowest level of which basically means 2/3 of knowledge is not about what you want to specialize in.
>>
Trade schools are the way to go.

I'm a Industrial Mechanic with a CIMM certification that took me 2 years and I started making 86k/yr at the age of 21. I maintain this huge machine that makes beer cans for MillerCoors. If you are ever sipping on a can of Steel Reserve, look on the can it'll have this little serial number on it near the Surgeon General's warning and barcode. If it ends in 2LA, I made your beer can.

you can make a history degree work if your really willing to make connections and put yourself through a lot of shit ie sacrificing your free time. shit; if you take the right elective courses you can literally right the test for a medical/law/graduate exam. but when peeps say do something they love you really have to whole ass it.

more hxc science. math. and engineering will be lost to you tho. ;^)
>>
>>56711352
this is actually good advice. im not sure how it ended up on pol. you can do anything but no half assing it. you have to care about your work.

I'm 25 and have been out of college for almost three years. I got an Associate Degree in basically nothing because all I really wanted out of my BA was to teach English in other countries and travel.

I've become extremely depressed and apathetic, going from job to job with large amounts of time in between. I'm about to just go live in the country side and work a few hours a day on an organic / free range farm because the state of the world is, well, you know.

I didn't go into any debt because I had a full tuition scholarship and qualified for pell grants. I feel extremely bleak about my future prospects, people tell me I'm still young but I don't feel young, the time seems to pass by exponentially fast with each passing day. The only thing that really seems feasible is to self teach myself web development or luck out and meet the right people who can hook me up with a good job.

Any advice? I have worked in everything from construction, written/visual media, animal grooming, kitchen and wait staff. I've even worked in a small factory doing incredibly mind numbing labor.

I'm considering going back to college and finishing a degree in international relations, then joining the military, or following through with teaching English. I want to be able to buy land and own a house later in life.
