I was stationed at Ft. Jackson working with the Iraqi interpreters that had been given visas because their families had been killed in retaliation for helping U.S. troops in the invasion. I slept in the same room as them. They were some of the nicest people I had ever met. One of them had a pseudo southern accent because he had spent much of his life working with Americans. He came home one day and his mother's, father's and brother's head were mounted on the gate outside of his house. He was lucky he was not home that day.
The Iraqi interpreters being some of the nicest people I had ever met still tried to kill me and every person helping them by attempting to poison our food with rat poison, despite our best attempts to help them.
What I learned is somethings can never be forgiven or forgot. For them and for me.
