The principle is the same. The Crusades were not about genocide either, they were pissed at Muslim incursions and they forced them out with the use of violence.
Violence is the glue that holds the fabric of society together. Civilization could not survive with implied violence to keep everyone in line. Violence does not always mean death and eradication.
The threat of violence is what makes others friendly. Actual violence is called for when the former fails, like it has with the west and islamic cultures.

The problem with Christianity is that ever since the church decided on a cannon Christians have been placing as much if not more emphasis on the old testament than the gospels.
When their not doing that they're probably focused on scary doomsday accounts (Revelations).
The core teaching of Christianity is contained within the gospels since that is usually what is and was translated first when introducing the religion to new converts.
